Dear parents or guardians,
Hello, I am Mr. Chen, your child's mathematics and computer science instructor at the Bronx High School of Science. This academic year, I am responsible for teaching the following courses (For detailed information about these courses, you can click on the links provided below or use the navigation menu on the left.):
I would like to extend a warm welcome to you for this semester's Remote Parent-Teacher Conference. Similar to previous years, I anticipate meeting with a substantial number of parents. Please note that the online parent-teacher meeting schedule consists of 5-minute blocks with no gaps between them. Consequently, I can only accommodate our discussion within your designated 5-minute time frame. Extending the meeting beyond this allocated time will impact subsequent meeting blocks.
To maximize our time together, I kindly request that you prepare any questions or concerns you may have in advance. This will enable us to make the most efficient use of our time. Additionally, you can monitor your child's grades by accessing the following link: https://login.jupitered.com/login/ . Should you have any other concerns or questions, please feel free to reach out to me via email at HChen8@schools.nyc.gov.
I sincerely appreciate your cooperation and apologize for any inconveniences this scheduling format may cause.
Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Best regards,
Mr. Chen
How can my child improve their performance in class?
To help your child excel academically, here are some essential strategies:
Ensure that your child completes all homework assignments consistently.
Encourage active participation in class, which involves taking thorough notes, asking and answering questions during lessons, collaborating with assigned partners on in-class problems, and presenting their work to the class.
Recommend that your child practice solving additional problems independently, using their homework and class notes as valuable resources to prepare for exams.
Support your child in discovering effective study habits that suit their learning style. For example, they might benefit from spreading their study time over several days, dedicating around 45 minutes each night, rather than cramming the night before an exam.
Where can my child seek extra assistance?
Your child has various avenues to seek additional help and clarification:
They can approach me with questions before or after class. Feel free to email me at any time (HChen8@schools.nyc.gov).
I offer office/SGI hours for personalized assistance. No appointment is necessary; you can find my hours (click here to see hours).
The school library provides tutoring sessions (the schedule is posted on the library door).
The National Honor Society offers a free tutoring program. To apply, follow these steps:
Go to Bronx Science website → Click Student Life → Click National Honor Society - Click Tutoring on the right side bar.
Additionally, your child can visit the office/SGI hours of other teachers who teach the same subject. Sometimes, a different explanation from another teacher can provide better clarity.
We are committed to helping your child succeed academically and are here to provide the necessary support. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns.
