The term light frigate is applied generally to everything that masses considerably below a frigate. Ships between 100,000 and 300,000 metric tons, while technically light frigates, are so much larger than the bulk of light frigates (most are between 10 and 70 thousand metric tons) that they are generally considered “gray frigates” for falling into a rather wide gray area of classification.
Light frigates are the bread and butter of interplanetary commerce and transportation. Several types of warship fall into the Light Frigate range, from landing craft to assorted varieties of tank. The designs of light frigates are many and varied, and practically every corporation in existence has a pet design. By and large, however, most are based on the idea that they will be landing inside the gravity well of another ship or a planet on a regular basis. As such, their decks are almost always oriented with a specific “down.”
