Armament Classes

The armament of a ship is determined based on the number of weapons and the output power or muzzle velocity of those weapons, whichever is lower. This means that there are some very narrow band particle weapons that class higher than hydrogen fusion powered nuclear warheads, simply because the muzzle velocity of the nukes launcher is rather low. This is seen by many corporations as a source of gross misclassification for many ships, but the GCSC (Galactic Council Standards Committee) isn’t in a hurry to change it, if for no other reason than a lot of Council craft seem much more impressive under the current system than they really are. Armament classes also don’t really apply in weights above cruisers, if for no other reason than modern battlehulks and fleet carriers outmass the largest cruisers by as much as a few powers of ten, and keepers typically carry enough firepower to single-handedly sterilize the surface of a planet or single-handedly blow up a good-sized moon.
