I worked on a networking project which involved the implementation of the OSI reference model transport layer services on top of a modern high-speed communications protocol called XTP. This required modification of the SunOS kernel, gaining an understanding of communications protocols and protocol interfaces and also involved attaining a good general understanding of ISODE along with a detailed knowledge of its transport subsystem. Knowledge of TCP was also gained as extensive comparisons between the ISODE transport layer over TCP and XTP had to be made.
The work environment consisted of a LAN segment containing several Sun Sparcstations running SunOS and PC's. From a practical perspective, the skills gained included C programming and UNIX, along with a good working knowledge of Macintosh's and PC's.
