Most of my time was spent as a systems manager/programmer on the VAX/VMS support team responsible for the management of a large VAXcluster, 2 LAVC's and several standalone VAX/VMS machines. The network encompassed remote and off-shore sites with remote users accessing machines on a large Ethernet network through DECservers and LAT servers. Specific duties included queue management, performance management, VMS and layered products upgrades, the development of systems programs using FORTRAN and being on a call out rota providing 24 hour, 7 day a week support in the event of any problems.
The remainder of my time with BP was spent on an applications support team which was responsible for personnel applications running under VMS. In this section I changed a set of programs from BASIC to COBOL in an important system which tracks the movement of offshore personnel. I was also involved in an optimisation exercise using ESQL on a personnel training and booking system.
