Each semester, there is a new syllabus, so if you have taken a class from me in the past, do not make any assumptions regarding any details or requirements. Students must attend the first day of class or may be dropped. For an online class, students must submit work in the online materials by the due dates for each online assignment posted. For an in person class, students must show up to the first class on time. Students in my online classes must take proctored exams by scheduling an appointment directly with the Academic Proctoring Center (APC). Students who will be out of the county during test dates must arrange with the APC to take a test at an approved proctoring center. For more info I have collected about the APC, please click More APC Info. NOTE: The State of California accreditation standard requires that 1 unit of Academic Credit represents a minimum of 48 total hours of student work. For a 4 unit class meeting 16 weeks, that represents 12 hours a week. Be prepared to devote that much time if you take one of my classes. More info can be found (see page 10) by clicking this link.
If you do enroll in MyOpenMath early, please do not expect responses to email or questions in MyOpenMath until the official first day of the semester. If you want to enroll in a class that is full, read the info about wait lists and permission numbers.
Before the first day of the semester, I send an email to enrolled students in any of my online or zoom classes using the email provided in SURF. Please click here to update your info in SURF.
My "online" classes are hybrid, not fully online. Students in my hybrid classes must take proctored tests. READ SYLLABUS FOR YOUR CLASS BEFORE THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS FOR ENROLLING AND COMPLETING FIRST ASSIGNMENT IN THE FREE ONLINE MATERIALS (called MyOpenMath--MOM) BY END OF FIRST DAY OF CLASS, OR YOU MAY BE DROPPED. Enrolled students in online classes are required to enroll in the free open source software called MyOpenMath which is where HW is done online. Students must submit online HW the first day of class, and actively spend at least 4 hours in the online materials each week submitting homework, or may be dropped. Students taking my class on campus must attend each class the first 2 weeks, and must attend class every week, or may be dropped. Prior to the first official day of class, info to enrolled online students will be posted here and also emailed using the email in SURF. Make sure your email is correct in SURF. Click http://www.miracosta.edu/studentservices/studenthelp/tutorials/surf/Written/UpdatemyPersonalInformation.html to learn how to Update Info/Email/Phone number in SURF.
Students in ALL of my classes need regular, reliable access to computer/internet to watch videos, print materials, and use a free online site called MyOpenMath (MOM) to submit homework. Students need to print out HW packets. The majority of the grade is based on tests. Students need to learn and master the material and demonstrate that by doing well on proctored test to pass the class. Doing well on HW is not the same as mastering or learning the material/concepts.
The book for most of my courses are one or more packets written by me. I do not make any money on these. For convenience, you may purchase in the bookstore, print them yourself, or copy the contents onto your own paper to do the work.
Click here for information about the free open source software, MOM: You can create an account and try it out.
