Posekany, Anton

Anton Vencil POSEKANY was born on 13 Jun 1878 in Tama County, IA, probably on the farm near Chelsea, and died 21 Feb 1927 in Chelsea, age 48. He married on 14 Feb 1899 in Chelsea, to Agnes M. "Aggie" STANEK, born 13 May 1881 in Poweshiek, IA, died in Jun 1961, age 80. He was 20 and she was 17 when they married.

Anton and Aggie were my great-grandparents. They had 4 children: Frank (1900), Milo (1905), Louis (1910) and Blanche Mayme (1911). Milo was my grandfather. You can see some pictures of Milo and his family on the Nora KRUEGER POSEKANY page.

Aggie was the daughter of John STANEK and Anna VISTINE, my gg-grandparents. The STANEK and POSEKANY extended families had many connections by marriage.

Anton also had a sister named Agnes, so there were two Agnes "Aggie" POSEKANYs.

Brothers Anton and Albert POSEKANY married sisters, Agnes and Josie STANEK, daughters of John STANEK and Anna VISTINE. See my STANEK page for more.

Anton and Aggie lived with his parents at first, and they were listed with the family in the 1900 US Census, taken 9 Jun 1900. See the Frantisek POSEKANY page for this. Their first child was born 19 Nov 1900.

In 1910 Anton had his own farm, already free of mortgage. His parents had retired and moved to Chelsea in 1908, and left parts of the farm to their sons. The census confirms that Anton and Agnes had been married 10 years, and Agnes had had 3 children, all still living.

1915 Iowa State Census card for Anton POSEKANY, front and back

The 1915 Iowa State Census was done with cards for each individual. They weren't saved in family groups, but the cards were numbered, with consecutive numbers within families. The family of Anton and Agnes appeared on cards 613 to 617. The youngest child, Blanch(e), had been born in 1911.

However, Louis was missing. He was born about Oct 1909, according to the 1910 census, so he should have been 5 or 6 in 1915. He must have died between 1910 and 1915. I have not found any record of Louis, except the 1910 census. Obituaries in this family never mention Louis.

In 1909, Anton had 80 acres in Section 4, Salt Creek Township, Tama County, IA. By 1916 this farm had expanded to 190 acres in Section 4, and 40 more acres in Section 9. See the property maps on the Frantisek POSEKANY page. In 1915 he had 62 cattle, 43 swine, and 150 fowl.

In 1925, all 3 surviving children were still at home and single. Anton owned his farm, free of mortgage, valued at $32,000. This census also gives the names of parents. Anton's parents were Frank POSEKANY and Mary TABOR, not MACEK. Aggie's parents were John STANEK and Anna VISTINE, married in Chicago, and Anna was still living, age 69.

The home of Anton and Agnes POSEKANY. Anton was a prosperous farmer. This house was on the farm, which was two miles NE of Chelsea.

The car parked in front of the POSEKANY house looks like a saloon car, late 1920s, maybe a Buick, but a lot of cars looked similar.

Anton had a barbwire scratch on his arm, that became infected. He refused to get medical help until it was too late. He was taken to a hospital in Cedar Rapids, and died there 5 days later, on 21 Feb 1927, at age 48.

After Anton died in 1927, Agnes lived on the farm with her son, Frank, before moving to Chelsea in 1946. In old age, she had several strokes, and was placed in a nursing home in Tama on 3 May 1961. Her son Milo died of stomach ulcers on 12 Jun 1961, and Agnes died 16 days later, on 28 Jun 1961, at age 81.

1. Frank Edward POSEKANY was born 19 Nov 1900, probably on the farm, near Chelsea, and died 25 Nov 1975 in Marengo, Iowa County, IA, age 75. He married (1) about 1933 in Marshalltown, IA, to Emma DVORAK.  They were divorced by 1940, and the 1940 US Census has Frank living with his mother.

Frank married (2) on 15 Jan 1942 in Lancaster, Schuyler, MO, to Amelia Margret BRABEC, born 30 Mar 1912 in Dardanelle, Yell, AR, died 5 Aug 1994 in Marengo, Iowa, IA, age 82. This was the 2nd marriage for both.

Amelia had married (1) on 10 May 1933 in Yell County, AR, to Hobert WESLEY, born 12 Aug 1909 or 30 Jun 1907 (conflicting records) in Dardanelle, Yell, AR, died 25 Sep 1938 in Dardanelle.

Amelia and Hobert had a child, Margaret Ann WESLEY, born 30 May 1934 in AR, died 20 Feb 2019 in Marengo, Iowa, IA, age 84. Margaret married Donald Lester SCHUMACHER, born 21 Sep 1921 in Marengo, Iowa, IA, died 16 Dec 2012 in Cedar Rapids, Linn, IA, age 91.

In 1950, Frank lived on his farm in Salt Creek, with his 2nd wife, Amelia, and his step-daughter, Margaret. They had no other children.

Amelia (BRABEC) (WESLEY) POSEKANY was a daughter of Will BRABEC and Mary KLOBER, and Mary was a sister of Josie KLOBER, who married Frank's uncle, Albert POSEKANY. Frank married the niece of his uncle's wife. So there was a connection between the POSEKANY family of Chelsea and the KLOBER family of Dardanelle, Yell, AR.

I have few photos of Frank, and none of Amelia.

2. Milo William POSEKANY was born 23 Oct 1905 on the farm, near Chelsea, and died 12 Jun 1961 in Elberon, Tama, IA, age 55. He married on 26 Dec 1925 in Cedar Rapids, to Nora Wilhelmine KRUEGER, born 25 Jan 1904 in Keystone, Benton, IA, died 30 Jun 1994 in State Center, Marshall, IA, age 90.

Milo and Nora were my grandparents. They are covered extensively on some of my other pages.

3. Louis POSEKANY was born Oct 1909, probably on the farm near Chelsea. As mentioned above, the only record of Louis is the 1910 US Census. He must have died before 1915. None of the obituaries in this family mention Louis. Maybe it was too painful. Or perhaps the 1910 US Census is mistaken.

4. Blanche Mayme POSEKANY was born 21 Oct 1911, probably on the farm near Chelsea, and died 27 Jan 1998 in Toledo, Tama, IA, age 86. She married on 1 Feb 1937 in Chelsea, to Frank James SEVCIK, born 11 Jul 1911 in Toledo, died 13 Mar 2008 in Toledo, age 96.

They farmed in Carroll Township, Tama County, IA, and had 4 children.
