Chaloupek (Kopidlo Branch)

The discussion of the Chaloupek Name has been moved to its own page.

There are two branches of CHALOUPEKs in my family tree. One comes from Kopidlo, and the other from Vlceves. Both are small towns in Bohemia. The Vlceves branch is described on the PRAGR page. This page describes the Kopidlo Branch. Other branches will appear on the Chaloupek Branches page.

Until recently, all of the information I have on the Kopidlo Branch of Chaloupeks in Bohemia comes from my third cousin, Leighton Kaloupek, who visited Kopidlo in 2002, and Miroslav Koudelka, a researcher hired by Leighton.

Another valuable source of information is the Genealogie pohodnych v Cechach website, maintained by Josef Vanek. I don't like to trust information form one source, but this seems well-researched, and consistent with the Koudelka data, where there is overlap. Vanek has the name written CHALOUPKA, or CHALOUPKOVA for the women, instead of CHALOUPEK.

This postcard from 1908 shows three buildings in Bĕleč, Bohemia, home of Jiřik ŠIMA.

Bratronice, home of Martin CHALOUPEK, as it looked in 1915.

The farthest back I have been able to go is my 6g-grandfather, Jiřik ŠIMA, who was born in the late 1600's. He probably lived in Bĕleč, a small town about 18 miles west of Praha (Prague), Bohemia. Jiřik was already deceased when his daughter, Alžbĕta ŠIMOVÁ, married Martin CHALOUPEK, the knacker of Bĕleč, on 23 Nov 1728, in Bĕleč. Martin was born in Bratronice, another village less than 2 miles NE of Bĕleč.

Jiřik ŠIMA b: Bef. 1694, d: Bef. 1729 in Bĕleč

.... Alžbĕta ŠIMOVÁ b: Bef. 1701 in Bĕleč, d: Bet. 1733–1738

.... + Martin CHALOUPEK b: Abt. 1700 in Bratronice, m: 23 Nov 1728 in Belec, d: Bef. 1738

Martin's birth date is not known very precisely, but he died very young. Martin and Alžbĕta (ŠIMA) CHALOUPEK had 3 children:

Jakub b. 05 Jul 1729 in Bĕleč, d: 04 Jan 1789 in Kopidlo #11

Kateřina b: 28 Apr 1731 in Bĕleč

Ludmila b: 20 Sep 1733 in Bĕleč

Alžbĕta must have died (perhaps in childbirth) because Martin had another child, Veronika, but the mother was listed as Anna, from Pušperk. But then, another record lists Jakub's and Katerina's mother as Ludmila. Vanek says this is obviously a mistake, so both he and Koudelka agree.

Veronika b: 17 Feb 1739 in Bratronice, Bohemia

These are most of the places the CHALOUPEKs came from. Click on one of the balloons to see the town name. You can zoom in and see what the towns look like today. For scale, the distance between Praha (Prague) and Plzeň (Pilsen) is about 82 km (51 miles). Bratrpnice is hiding behind Belec, just west of Praha. Kopidlo is behind Kočín, a little further west.

I don't know what ever became of Martin CHALOUPEK's three daughters, but his son, Jakub, married Anna VESELÁ on 13 Jan 1749 in Postoloprty. Anna was the daughter of Václav VESELÝ, the knacker of Postoloprty. Jakub was, before his marriage, the knacker of Radnice.

Anna VESELÁ b: Abt. 1721 in Postoloprty, d: 11 Jul 1779 in Žebnice

The Peace Square in Postoloprty, home of Václav VESELÝ, as it appeared in 1915.

It must have been soon after they married that Jakub and Anna moved to Kopidlo, a small village in western Bohemia, 44 miles west of Prague. Jakub was the knacker of Kopidlo. CHALOUPEKs lived in Kopidlo houses #9, #10, #11 and #20 at various times. House #10, shown below, is still in the family.

This picture was a little surprising to me. I was expecting a quaint little cottage, for something that has been in the family for more than 300 years. Apparently, it has been remodeled a few times, and is still very much in use! On the map above, Kopidlo is just east of Plasy. If you switch to satellite view, and zoom in a few times, keeping Kopidlo in the center, you can see which house it is. Leighton KALOUPEK, who visited Kopidlo in 2002, and took this photo, said:

The Old House

This is the house that Vencil (Vaclav - Wenceslaus - Wenzl **Czech, English, German) was born in and it is still in the family. According to the researcher it doesn't go back as far as the cousins told me. I thought they said it was built by someone with some money from Plasy in the 1600's. Research records show that Vencil's 2g-grandfather lived there. It sits on the south edge of Kopidlo and has farmland that goes with it. I didn't see any nice typical crops like Iowa has, but it was early June. It looks like it has been added on to also. I am one that doesn't want to look like I'm prying, so I didn't ask for a tour of the inside, etc. Lynna went inside to help carry out tea, and said it looked old inside, but nice and clean. It is house #10

Jakub and Anna had 13 children, from 1750 to 1774, and they were all born in Kopidlo. Most of these 13 children died in infancy or early childhood.

If Anna's birthdate of 1721 is correct, then she had her first child at 29, and her last child at age 53. The only reason we have for setting her birth date at 1721 is the record from Žebnice, that she died on 11 Jul 1779, at age 58. She was probably more like 48 in 1779. In other words, I suspect that Anna (VESELÁ) CHALOUPEK was born around 1731, not 1721.

It was not uncommon to reuse the name of a child who had died. The first Václav must have died before 26 Jun 1768. The 5th child, Anna, lived past age 17, and knew 7 of her younger siblings, and briefly, one older sister.

The Great Famine of 1770-1771 killed half a million people, about 12% of the population of the Czech lands. In 1770, Jakub (41) and Anna (49?) would have had Veronica (14), Jakub (11), Kateřina (9) and Václav (2).

Václav was born 4 years after his next oldest sibling, and his younger brother, Matĕj, almost 6 years after that. No birth control! The 2 brothers would have been young men during the war against revolutionary France, and still 30-somethings during the Napoleonic Wars. It's doubtful that they were able to avoid military duty. Those were turbulent times in Europe, east and west!

The only one of the 13 who I know lived to adulthood was my 3g-grandfather, Václav CHALOUPEK. He married Kateřina VOLMUTOVÁ (or WOLLMUTOVÁ) on 21 Sep 1788.

Kateřina Volmutová b: 1761 in Hodoviz

Katharina was from Hodoviz, about 10 miles west of Kopidlo, and her parents were Jan and Marie (ŠŤÁHLAVSKÁ) Volmut. Please see the WOLLMUT page.

Václav and Kateřina CHALOUPEK had 14 children, all born in Kopidlo. It looks like the family moved from house #9 to house #20 some time between 1805 and 1808. House #9 was where Václav's younger brother was born, so it was probably where he was born also. Perhaps Václav and Katerina stayed with his parents for the first few years of their marriage. They must have needed a bigger house!

Again, the first few children died in infancy or early childhood, and the only ones who I know lived to adulthood were Jiřik and Jan, who died of tuberculosis at age 29 and 23, and my gg-grandfather, Matĕj CHALOUPEK. I don't even know what became of his twin, Jakub.

Records indicate that Matĕj was illiterate. It is probably safe to say that most of his siblings and ancestors were also.

Kateřina (VOLMUTOVÁ) CHALOUPEK must have died, and Václav, like his grandfather, remarried and had another child. His second wife was another Kateřina,

Kateřina BUMLOVA b: Solopisky, Bohemia

who was the daughter of Jiři BUML, of Solopysky, and their child was

On 10 Oct 1837, Matĕj married Kateřina HOLZKNECHTOVÁ, daughter of Václav HOLZKNECHTand Josepha SCHLEHOFEROVA. This was six months after his father Vaclav had died. The HOLCKNECHTs were from Bor, about 40 miles southwest of Kopidlo, just 10 miles from the German border. The town of Bor (Bory) no longer exists, having been incorporated into the city of Klatovy. Václav was the knacker of Bor. See the HOLZKNECHT and SCHLEHOFER pages.

Vencil and Frank (my great grandfather) both came to America in the early 1870's. According to Elberon Community History 1881-1981:

Vencil Kaloupek was born in Bohemia, Austria, in November of 1848. He came to America in 1871, spending a year and a half in Chicago and then moved his family to LeGrand, Iowa, where he worked on the railroad for 4.5 years, and farmed for three years in York township. Then moved to Belle Plaine and worked for one year as a railroad employee. After that he came to Elberon where he worked as a carpenter for three years. Later opened a Butcher shop and after two years sold it. For the next 27 years he owned and operated a threshing outfit. During this time he built the Opera House with his living quarters in the rear of the building. In 1872, he married Lottie Dymel. She was also born in Bohemia in 1856. Eight children were born to this union. Vencil at the age of 73 visited with relatives and friends in Czech. for nine months. Vencil died December 28, 1932, and his wife in 1935. [Elberon Community History 1881-1981, Iowa Geneological Library, Des Moines, IA]

There are many variations and inconsistencies in the records. Vencil was sometimes spelled Vencel or Vincel. Václav is translated as James. At some point, Vencil chose to spell his name KALOUPEK, and his descendants have retained that spellling. Lottie DYMEL is actually Charlotte DEIML, according to family members. She is also called Mithelda, or Charlotte DEINOL, and was born in 1854, or 1856, or 1857.

Lottie DEIML was a Jewish girl, who grew up in Kopidlo. Some of her family members, who stayed in Bohemia, became victims of the Holocaust.

Vencil Václav "James" KALOUPEK (1848 - 28 Dec 1932)

Vencil actually traveled to Bohemia twice; in 1921 and 1923. He was in Belle Plaine when his brother died, in 1929 (see below). He died on 28 Dec 1932, at age 84.

Vencil's Sale

V. Kaloupek's sale, which was held last Wednesday, was well attended. Mr. Kaloupek will leave for Ceska Slovak, Bohemia, in the near future. [The Traer Star-Clipper, Traer, Tama County, Iowa, (Microfilm, State Historical Library of Iowa), 19 August 1921]

Frank Louis CHALOUPEK, my great grandfather, was born on 20 Nov 1852, probably in Bohemia. He came to America soon after his brother Vencil (above), in about 1872. He became a US citizen on 1 Nov 1873, in Chicago. He had 3 wives, and outlived them all.

Frank's first wife was Fina ČEČÁK (or CACEK, COCEK), who he married on 15 Apr 1877, in Norway, Iowa, which is in SE Benton County. I don't know anything else about her, but she must have died without offspring.

A gravestone in Oakhill Cemetery, Belle Plaine has four lines on the front:

CHALOUPEK

DEC. 9, 1856

MAY 6, 1878

BABY 1878

and on the top of the stone is the name Tony. I believe this is Fina ČEČÁK's grave, that she died in childbirth, and that her child, Tony, was buried with her.

The 1880 US Census has Frank CHALOPKA, age 25, born in Bohemia, as a boarder in the Joseph KUCERA home. He is listed as a RR employee, and widower. I think it is the same Frank.

Frank then married Mary YAROSHEK, my great grandmother, on 30 Oct 1880. They lived in Belle Plaine, Iowa, and had 6 kids, listed below. The YAROSHEKs had a small farm about 5 miles south of Chelsea, Iowa, in Powesheik County. Mary died in childbirth (see below) in 1901.

At almost 60 years of age, Frank married for a third time, on 4 Aug 1912. His new wife was Anna Jelinek, age 43. She had also been married twice before, so her name had changed from JELINEK to KRATOSKA to LISKOVEC to CHALOUPEK. That took some time to sort out! Multiple marriages were uncommon among Catholics. The spouse had to be deceased - no divorces were allowed.

Anna JELINEK (1869 - 1926)

All of Frank's children were from his second wife, Mary YAROSHEK.

Frank and Mary (YAROSHEK) CHALOUPEK lived in Belle Plaine, Iowa. They were my great grandparents. Frank never did any farming, as far as I know. (Although the 1916 map of Otter Creek Township, Tama County, has a farm under the name Frank CHALOUPEK, that's 5 miles or so northwest of Chelsea.)

Frank CHALOUPEK was a Car Inspector in the Belle Plaine railroad yard. Several CHALOUPEK/HALOUPEKs worked for the railroad. There are 4 or 5 nice pictures of the Belle Plaine yard in the Paul Swanson Postcard Collection. Just search for Belle Plaine, IA.

Frank and Mary had 6 or 7 children (BP = Belle Plaine, IA):

Anna CHALOUPEK b:

I say 6 or 7 children because I'm not sure about the last one, Anna. Family records say that Mary CHALOUPEK died in childbirth, in 1901. This was more than 11 years after the birth of her 6th child, but Mary was still not quite 40. Maybe Anna was the child, and maybe she survived. Probably not, since there doesn't seem to be any other information about her.

The 1895 Iowa State Census has the CHALOUPEK family in Ward 2, Belle Plaine, Benton County.

Burthy must be Agnes, Edana is Edna, and Meary is Mary. Apparently, the family moved around between 1881 and 1887, and eventually came back to Belle Plaine. The 1900 US Census has the same family, still in Ward 2, Belle Plaine. Frank Jr., age 19, has left home, and Charley, age 15 or 12, is also absent. I don't know where Charley was in 1900.

The 1900 US Census also has immigration dates for Frank and Mary as 1858 and 1857, which would mean that they had been in the US about 42 and 43 years, respectively. It also say that they have been in the US 32 and 33 years. There is some mistake, and I'm inclined to disbelieve both of these dates. For one thing, Mary was born in 1861 or 1863. Other records indicate that Frank immigrated in the early 1870's. If he immigrated at age 6, who traveled with him? I can't find any record of him in the US before 1877.

Charlie CHALOUPEK served in WWI. His Registration card, from 5 Jun 1917, indicates that he was born in 1887, not 1884. We learn that he was tall, of medium build, had blue eyes and light-colored hair.

Charlie CHALOUPEK is not listed with his parents and siblings in the 1900 Census. I don't think he ever married or had children. When came back to Iowa after WWI, he was something of a hermit, living in a small shack near Chelsea.

Charlie Chaloupek

From Leighton Kaloupek, 2 Aug 2010:

He must have been affected by the war. He lived about 1 1/2 miles west of town in some timber near the Iowa River. I don't know what he did when it flooded. I heard he lived in a shack ( on somebody else's land?) that was may 10 x 10. He never drove and just came into town for groceries I guess and maybe to the tavern. ... Around Chelsea he was known as 'Lob' Chaloupek. I don't know anything about the nickname.

On 4 Aug 1912, Frank CHALOUPEK remarried, to Annie (YELINEK) LISKOVEC. Annie already had a daughter, Libbie, who married Michael M. MORRISSEY, a medical student, who later became Chief Surgeon in a hospital in Pierre, SD. Annie died of cancer in 1926.

Frank and Mary's first child was also named Frank Louis CHALOUPEK, my grandfather. As an adult, he changed his last name to HALOUPEK so that he would be able to get his mail! His brother Albert also changed to HALOUPEK, possibly for the same reason. There were many CHALOUPEKs in the Chelsea/Belle Plaine area, and several of them were named Frank or Albert.

When his mother died in childbirth, Frank Jr was 20 years old, working on Chris Peters' farm in Oneida Township, Tama County. He received this telegram from his father.

Frank CHALOUPEK died in 1929, at age 76. Here is his obituary, from the Tama News-Herald.

FRANK CHALOUPEK OF BELLE PLAINE DIED SUDDENLY

Frank Chaloupek, past seventy-five years of age, died suddenly Monday night at the home of his son, Frank, in Belle Plaine. His Brother, Vincel, of Elberon was visiting. They were at the supper table with Frank and his family when Mr. Chaloupek said that he felt rather tired and lay down for a while. Within fifteen minutes he was dead. The cause of death was heart failure.

Although he was advanced in years Mr. Chaloupek had been in good health. He had been living alone in his home and taking his meals with Frank for some time.

He is survived by his brother, three sons, Frank of Belle Plaine, and Charles and Albert of Chelsea, besides a daughter, Anna, who is married and living in Belle Plaine.

Funeral Services were held Wednesday at Belle Plaine, and burial was made in the Catholic Cemetery in Chelsea.

His granddaughter, who was my Aunt, Dorothy Marie (HALOUPEK) McCAUSLAND, remembered it this way:

Dorothy's Recollection

That paper article is all wrong about Grandpa Chaloupek's death.

In the first place, he cooked all his own meals in his home on 4th Ave.

Uncle Jim from Elberon came to visit him and it was the night Don graduated from Hi School. He had fixed cucumbers in vinegar, as both men liked them: but they didn't soak them in salt first.

Grandpa, shortly after an early supper (5 pm) got violent cramps. At six we were eating supper and Uncle Jim ran in all out of breath , and yelled Frank, Frank call the Dr. Your father is very sick.

By the time Dr Yavorsky got there Grandpa was dead of a heart attack. That was in May 1929. I can't remember the exact date, but it was the last of May.

Grandpa was a Car Inspector in B.P. yards. He wore kangaroo shoes, and one inquisitive co-worker asked him where he got them, and he replied "I got one the same place I got the other, and paid the same price for one as I paid for the other."

So "Uncle Jim from Elberon" was Frank's brother Vencil, who changed his name to KALOUPEK. I don't know whether he also got sick from the cucumbers.

The Chaloupek Family Bible has three pages of handwritten information, on Marriages, Births and Deaths in the family of Frank and Mary (YAROSHEK) CHALOUPEK. There are several mistakes, which I have left in, but this is still a very reliable source.
