Wellen, Bögen und Felder (waves, bows and fields), a code to the art of Gwydion
Gwydion's (Christian Gronds) works of art are mostly acrylic paintings on canvas.
The style is strictly two-dimensional, like a painted mosaic, and contains a structure of different layers of colour and different levels of logical and artistic abstractions.
In these works of art, the background is meant as a mathematical and aesthetical framework for the composition.
It contains its own significant geometrical composition that corresponds to the composition of the elements of the foreground.
Each composition follows a strict code. Usually there is no “middle ground”, just a background and a “hovering” arrangement of geometrical elements in front.
The main focus of the beholder is on these elements because they are clear cut, intensely coloured and show dynamic movement, while the background colours are toned down by a beige colour layer.
On these elements lay the main-focus of the viewer, because they are sharp-shaped, intense-coloured and with a dynamic movement, while the background-colours are weakened by a cover of “beige”. The elements in the front can be purely abstract or developed into concrete figures like the erotic-icons of the Great Goddess. There are also mixup-compositions of female deities and abstract contents in some of Gwydion’s works.
The elements in front are sometimes purely abstract and sometimes designed by the artist as figurative images like the erotic icons of the "Great Goddess". There are also mixed compositions of female deities and abstract contents in some of Gwydion’s works.
Throughout the diversity of Gwydion’s paintings, we find a relatively small number of typical elements constantly recurring in his works of art. This corresponds to the artist's point of view that the plurality of life and universe (and also aesthetics) is created by ever-changing new combinations of just a few fundamental elements. This is an atomistic and synthetic approach.
The following structures appear repeatly:
Voici quelques motifs récurrents:
THE CIRCLE: lines, wavy lines and coloured sectors. It represents the female principle in general, but also motherhood and love in a concrete context. More abstractly speaking, it stands for the entity of a closed and small, but complete universe.
THE CHILD: a kidney-shaped embryonic structure, represents the Growing New in general. "The New" can be a new life or (more generally speaking) a new idea that is not thoroughly thought through yet.
THE INTRUDER: a dynamic waveform with a shock -wave frontline, represents the male principle in general and also a critical disturbance of the given balance/harmony. It is not always destructive; it can be necessary for the development of something new.
THE GLOBAL WAVES: with wide arcs, are structuring the whole scene.
THE VARIOUS WAVE-LINES: often overlapping in interference curves, symbolize any kind of principle, physical or social interactions.
THE SPIRITUAL WAVE-FORM: one wave with two curved lines, represents beauty in general and a moral ideal.
SQUARES, TRIANGLES AND OTHER GEOMETRICAL PATTERNS: symbolize (depending on the context) external factors, diverging interests - drawing the soul in diverging directions- or corresponding ideologies.
THE SPIRAL: is always a symbol for contemplation; contemplation for the viewer and the artist as well.
THE EYE: stands for consciousness and understanding.
THE BOSOM: is the symbol of the goddess, motherhood, love and tender care in general. In a more abstract context it stands for the absolute positive, the constructive and nurturing principle.
