Dr. Groth was born March 17th, 1877 Guelph, Ont. Can. His mother was English and father Prussian. When a year old his parents moved to Toronto, Can., where he lived and attended school until the age of 18, when they moved back to Guelph. He then went to night school and studied Architecture and Drafting and worked in a carpentry shop where everything was made by hand. He followed the carpentry trade in Guelph for sometime and then went to Quebec, lived in a small town called Outremont, a short distance from Montreal, working on the construction of a large Club House and Dog Kennels. From there he went to British Columbia (Vancouver), working along the same line, except he specialized in Stair building. After in Vancouver for a while he decided to take a trip to San Francisco, this was a pleasure trip and he went via Steamer Queen, not much of a pleasure trip. On the way down as they encountered a severe storm going around Cape Flattery. The return trip was made via Canadian Rockies. After arriving home he went to Winnipeg where he was married to Miss Louisa Ledgerwood. His wife died forty days after their marriage and a short time after that a very close friend died. He was very much disturbed about their deaths. In fact, had a nervous breakdown. After recovering he went to work for Page-Hersey Tube & Steel Co. as Pattern Maker, staying there about two and a half years. Still being perplexed about the death of his wife and friend he decided to delve into the study of medicine and in Jan’y 1914 he graduated from the Los Angeles Electic Medical School, passing the State Board and started practicing first in Los Angeles.
