Our grandfather, George William Groth (II), M.D., built and owned the first hospital on N. Baldwin. He still had it when I spent a summer with him in 1950. He showed me how he mixed medicines...and took me on house visits...he was a wonderful old-fashioned practitioner. He also collected National Geographic magazines...from about the first year they were published.
Incidentally, his photo--and photos of his brother, Arthur Groth, and sister, Mary Groth (Aunt Mamie)--are prominent in the book An Illustrated Practice of Osteopathy--1908, published by A.T. Still University, Kirksville, MO. After he obtained his D.O., he took additional medical school education in L.A. to get his M.D. Uncle Art practiced in Pasadena; Aunt Mamie in Sierra Madre.
