Sep 2, 1949 Sierra Madre News
Philip B Allan 1 13 2014:
Germany surrendered to the Allies on 08 May 1945. The Aug. 9. 1956 newspaper article says that the Singers spent 4½ years is displaced persons camps after the war, so that tallies approximately with their arrival in the U.S. in mid-Aug 1949.
I think the year of the paper must be 1949, since (1) the Aug. 9, 1956 newspaper article says that they arrived in America on Aug. 15, 1949, and (2) the newspaper clipping dated Sep. 2 says that "the Singer family arrived two weeks ago in New Orleans." Your grandparents would obviously have sponsored the Singer family sometime before their arrival in Sierra Madre and probably sometime in 1949.
Lydia and Erwin (not Ervin) are both listed and pictured as sophomores in the 1950 Yearbook of Pasadena City College (see attached photo from Ancestry). I think this must be them, even though Ervin's name is spelled as Erwin, and I think they may be twins since both are listed as sophomores in the same year.
The Singer family are listed in the Kruk family tree on Ancestry as follows.
Charles William Singer, b. 26 Mar 1904 in Latvia, d. 04 Mar 1997 in Los Angeles. His wife, listed as Mary Singer Urban, b. 03 May 1907, d. Aug 1978 in Los Angeles. One of their children is listed as "Private" and the other is listed as Ervin Singer, b. 12 Jun 1931, d. 03 Jul 2000 in Incline Village, Washoe, Nevada. No other children are listed.
Ervin is listed as having been married to Jacqueline Mae Snyder, b. 10 Jan 1937, in Milgrove, Missouri, d. 1995 in Ukiah, Mendocino, CA. One child for them is listed as "Private." No other child in listed. Ervin was naturalized on 14 Jan 1955. His name is given as "Ervin Alfred Singer" and formerly as "Erwins Alfreds Zinger." His address is listed as 28 N. Baldwin Ave., Sierra Madre, Calif.
