For the 'Schakeljaar' of my Human Geography studies (Sociale Geografie), I had to write a literature thesis (Literatuurscriptie). I wrote about Indians & Casinos in the USA. The 'Schakeljaar' is there to make the transition from HBO to University run smoothly. I finished Business Economics in 2004 and wanted to do the master Urban Geography. The Literature thesis is in Dutch and was awarded an 8 in 2005.
There was a broad range of subjects to choose from for the literature thesis. I chose Indians & Casinos, because my late grandmother from my mother’s side has Surinam Indian in her and I wanted to know more about Indians. The Indians are officially called Native Americans. The USA compensated the Native Americans with land and the right to open Casinos on it.
Nowhere else in the USA casinos were allowed. 2 of the many Indian land with casinos on it succeeded. The rest of the Indian land was in poverty, but had sovereignty within the USA. All the Indian land faced a new problem addiction to alcohol and gambling. The Native Americans on the 2 Indian land with successful Casinos were rich and could deal with the problems that came with casinos, but the Native Americans living on the less successful Indian Land with casinos faced poverty, addiction and many other problems. Because of the sovereignty they had to deal with it themselves.
*Hogeschool Economische Studies Amsterdam ( HES Amsterdam) merged in 2004. I graduated in the summer of 2004, before the merger.
