Are you tired of buying worthless toys and electronics for Birthdays and Christmas? New to camping and unsure what equipment to buy? Here is a list of suggestions to help you get started!
We have attempted to source a good, better, best... some items may be out of your price range for limited use... especially with growing kids. Our general recommendation is to buy the best you can afford, take into consideration how much use you will get, and if you will outgrow and adjust accordingly.
LABELING IT ALL: Mabel's Labels, you cannot know how awesome these labels are until your stuff starts coming back to you because of them. We love:
BAGS: Bags should help keep gear together, it should be small enough your daughter can carry it on her own. Keep in mind that packing girl gear in a vehicle often means nooks and crannies... bags that are too big cause problems. Especially if you show up late. ;-)
LL Bean Adventure Large Duffle
Deuter ACT Trail 30 Hiking Backpack
TENTS: Tents should have a rain fly that goes all the way to the ground. A 4-person tent fits 4 small girls well- fits 2 older girls well- fits 1 adult well. Backpacking tents are a different beast and not included on this list.
Alps Mountaineering 4 person tent
Ascend Red Lodge 4 Person Tent
SLEEPING BAGS: This is a hard one, budget, climate, frequency of use, and constantly changing product make it difficult to make recommendations. Keep in mind that the rating on the bag will keep you alive at the temp, not warm and cozy. So on a 40 Degree night a 40 degree bag will keep you alive, not comfortable. For leaders we highly recommend doing packing checks and seeing what sleeping bags your girls have, indoor/sleepover type bags are not great for outdoor camping. We also recommend bringing an extra sleeping bag... keep it in your car, you'll be glad you have it. One spilled water bottle can ruin someone's night if their bag is wet. We have sourced this for Oregon, in fall, spring, winter, where it can often be 30-40 at night. As of today we like...
Costco Klymit 2- 30 degree bag
SLEEPING BAG LINERS: A small blanket or throw inside the bag can make the difference between teeth chattering until you wake up and cozy warm comfort. We like:
Added comfort- perfect for adults who are too old to suffer.
Sea to Summit Silk Stretch Travel Liner- for adults who are too old to be cold...
FLASHLIGHTS: Essential. Frequently lost... Be sure to label with your name... Headlamps are a great option if camping in shoulder season to winter where days are shorter.
REI Petzl Tikkina Headlamp- smoking hot buy
Amazon Handheld LED flashlights... so cheap they are disposable...
SLEEPING PAD:
REI Therma Rest Ridge Rest SOLite $29.95
REI Thermarest Trail Scout Sleeping Pad $54,95
SLEEPING COT: For Leaders who are too old to pick themselves up off the ground at 2:00am to pee... best investment you can make is a cot.
Amazon- Alpcour Folding Campcot
MESS KIT:
As Basic as you can get- great price- label all parts because 10 other people will also have this.
RAIN GEAR: We live in Oregon- It rains...
BOGS are amazing.. and more expensive. If you will use them buy them.
Columbia Ellis Street Jacket- Women's Sizing
REI North Face Stretch Rain Jacket- Girl's Sizing
WARMTH: Layers! Again function, use, and how fast they will outgrow should all go into decision making. A good Fleece jacket or a nice puffy coat can mean a huge difference in how comfortable your daughter is on a campout.
Columbia Springs Full Zip Jacket- Women's Sizing
Columbia Sherpa Jacket- Girls Sizing
Columbia Puffer Jacket- Girls Sizing
Columbia Puffer Down- Women's Sizing
POCKET KNIFE- Another item frequently lost or misplaced... look for function!

CAMP STOVE-
