Events

The MBGSA hosts several volunteer, outreach, and social events throughout the academic year and during the summer months. In addition, the organization partners with the Grice Marine Lab, the College of Charleston, and other like-minded entities in advertising relevant events to our members. GPMB Research Colloquium

The 2022 GPMB Research Colloquium took place this year on Saturday, October 14th!

The keynote speaker was Dr. Jeremy Goldbogen. Dr. Goldbogen is an associate professor at Stanford University and Co-Director of the Hopkins Marine Station. His cutting-edge research includes the energetics, foraging ecology, and biomechanics of baleen whales and other marine species. As an undergraduate student, his first REU experience was at the College of Charleston.

Winners of the 2022 Colloquium were:

ABCs of Communication Award

Kelsey Martin – “Are farmed fish full of chemicals?”

Poster Presentation

1st: Lexi Mitchell – “Understanding reproductive development in female white shrimp (Penaeus setiferus) to support sustainable management”

2nd: Kassidy Lange – “Biological characteristics of two mesophotic gorgonian corals and suitability for restoration”

Oral Presentation

1st: Jessica Wenclawiak – “Assessing microplastic uptake and depuration in the Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea virginica

2nd: Ian Rolfe – “Adaptations to the photosynthetic potential and pigmentation of mesophotic macroalgae in the Hawaiian Archipelago”

The GPMB Student Research Colloquium is an annual event that is open to the public, followed by one of our most important socials of the year -- the GPMB Low Country Boil. The goals of the colloquium include:

  • increase awareness of ongoing marine biological research by GPMB and MES students,

  • give students experience with formal scientific presentations,

  • introduce new graduate students to research opportunities in marine biology, and

  • promote interaction among faculty and students.

All GPMB students (excluding incoming students) are expected to present their research (or proposed research) in the Colloquium in the form of a poster or oral presentation. MES students conducting research in marine biology are also invited to participate. Priority for oral presentations will be given to Marine Biology students who have at least preliminary data to present. Marine biology students are expected to give at least one oral presentation in the Colloquium before graduation, if possible.
