Students rarely read the front matter of a textbook. I know I rarely did as a student myself, but it's a good idea to read at least parts of the front matter - especially the instructions on using the textbook. That part provides a sort of roadmap (always the reference to maps) to using the text effectively. It's like "scouting" your opponent in a sport. Effective use of a text can be enhanced by being aware of the organizing concepts used by the author - it increases the readers meta-cognitive abilities...or in plainer terms; it increases your awareness of how you are learning as you read. Take a few moments and look this section over.

Fourth Edition
The 4th edition should be ready for classroom use by Fall Semester 2026 - Mid August, 2026.
Dr. Graves will beta-test it, and all other adopters are welcome to do the same, but I suspect that there will be hiccups, and a well-tested edition will be ready for January 2027.
