Personal identity can be very complex. Ethnic identity is shaped by cross-cutting factors, including language, racial characteristics, national heritage, and religion. Ethnic identities shape a wide variety of cultural practices, including politics, religion, marriage, and economics. Geography plays a significant role in creating, maintaining, and eroding ethnic identity.
