A brief bio (of sorts) HOME
Mary Katherine Glover (who went by Kathy or M.K.) was born in Baltimore, Maryland on February 12, 1943 to Marie Lillian Glover (Schmidt) and Hal Davis Glover. She lived most of her childhood in Lima, Ohio with many trips back to Baltimore to visit with her extended family including many beloved Aunts and an Uncles.
It was there she met Richard Hinchcliffe and married him. Soon they had a son Edward Hal (Ted). Then they all moved to Dayton, Ohio and had me- Ellen Marie and began acquiring a long dynasty of cats. In Dayton she worked at Children and Family Services as a caseworker and was involved with the Dayton Women's Liberation group.
In the 1970’s Kathy began to paint with watercolors and stayed up many a late night listening to records and painting. She eventually went back to school and became a Montessori teacher for 3-6 year olds. She and Richard divorced in 1982 but remained close friends and loving companions for the rest of her life. He was by her side, holding her hand when she joined the Ancestors.
In 1986 Kathy moved from Ohio to Massachusetts and at last lived by her beloved Ocean. She taught at Scituate Montessori, continued painting, grew huge flower gardens and spent lots of time walking, swimming and being with the Ocean. In 1995 she left the Ocean and set out for Minneapolis, MN where her entire family had ended up- Ellen, Richard, Ted and his wife Gretchen.
In 2000 her grandchildren Henry and Eleanor Erickson-Hinchcliffe were born to Ted and Gretchen. They were a source of constant joy and inspiration for her. She was their Gran and adored them. She spent many wonderful seasons playing and snuggling with them.
As she would tell it- she first felt the call of the moon and mysteries as a young girl. Late at night she would climb out her bedroom window and dance among the huge Elms of her back yard and swing on her swing set under the moon. She attended Marymount College in New York State where she majored in history. After graduating she moved to Prince George in British Columbia and taught high school.
Kathy lived in Minneapolis, MN in the Longfellow neighborhood for 12 years. Ellen often lived with her and always her sweet little companion cat-Lucy. She had many great friends including Peter and Susan next door with whom she shared many meals and blue drinks in the backyard. For the last six months Ellen and her husband Juma came to live with her and the three of them had many fun times watching favorite movies, discussing politics, listening to jazz and always laughing.
She loved living two blocks from the Mississippi and turning most of her front, side and back yard into a riot of color...peonies, geraniums, day lilly, cosmos, sunflowers, rudbeckia, nasturtiums, morning glories, prairie grasses, artemisia and on and on...
After several teaching jobs she began working at The Friends School of MN and felt she had found her home as an educator and made many friendships there. She ran the after school program, the arts based summer camp and worked in various classrooms.
Kathy always painted through good times and bad, she sold some paintings had a few shows with WARM, at The Babylon Arts Center with Ellen, The Blue Moon and her work has been featured in We'Moon.
She was always deeply committed to social justice and protested among other things against the war in Iraq. She was a feminist and was always interested in learning from and justice for Native America. She pursued healing, compassion and anti-racism. On November 4, 2008 she stayed up until midnight to witness Obama's win and even took a swig of Richard's whiskey when Obama took Ohio!
Her life, body of work, teaching and relationships over the years all stand as a testament to her passion, skill and vision as an artist and human being. There is no one else quite like Mary Katherine Glover, never will be.
