Projects: ONR PAL3

Overview:

As the Navy seeks to reduce manning on ships, fewer senior sailors will be available to mentor sailors newly assigned to a ship and guide them as they seek to translate schoolhouse knowledge acquired on land into operational knowledge that can be used at sea. In collaboration with Arizona State University and the University of Memphis, the Institute for Creative Technologies at the University of Southern California has created a prototype on-the-job Personal Assistant for Life Long Learning (PAL3). This system guides new sailors in performing tasks in training environments and mission essential duties. The current PAL3 prototype has knowledge of electronic circuits for training Avionics Electronics Technicians. A study has been conducted that shows that PAL3 dramatically slows down skill decay for electronic circuits.
