Prison ethnographers at LASA2015

Post date: Feb 11, 2015 10:8:59 PM

From May 27-29th, 2015, the 33rd edition of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Annual Conference, titled "Precarities, Exclusions, Emergencies" will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. At this congress, within the track of 'Defense, Violence and (In)security' five panels are organized around the Latin American prison. GPRN member Chris Garces co-organized two of these panels ("Precariedad y mundos carcelarios en América Latina" - precarities and prison worlds in Latin America - I and II); and GPRN member Julienne Weegels organized another ("Central America from Behind Bars"). Undoubtedly the panels will spur discussion not only on the (precarious) research sites, but also on the necessity and difficulties of conducting prison ethnography in the region.
