Vanderbilt Rotation

In July of second year, residents in good standing will be invited to a 4 week observational rotation at the Vanderbilt University Department of Emergency Medicine to participate in the intern boot camp alongside new Vanderbilt EM residents. This will be an opportunity to consolidate knowledge on the key concepts of EM, get to know Vanderbilt residents and faculty, participate in EMS ride alongs, in depth simulation and ultrasound experiences, and observe in a busy tertiary care ED.


Preparation should start at least 3 months in advance. Use the guidelines below to start your preparation at your earliest convenience. Please email your completed forms to Ms. Brynna Hartneck (brynna.m.hartneck@vanderbilt.edu and cc Dr. Luke and Dr. Forget).

  • Read the Vanderbilt Observational Experience information (below). You will generally be following those rules.

  • Complete a pre-employment style physical

  • Vaccination paperwork (attached) and copy of all your vaccination records. you will likely need a CXR report for TB clearance

  • Obtain a letter of good standing from your police department


For your Lifeflight experience (helicopter retrieval) please specify in your email:

Please note

  • Vanderbilt will cover the accommodation for 30 days (29 nights). Extra accommodations are the responsibility of the resident.

  • Any added time beyond the standard 4 week rotation must be approved by the programme director and may count against your vacation time.
