History:

After several years of collaboration between physicians from Georgetown Public Hospital and Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the United States the decision was made to propose a post-graduate Emergency Medicine training program.

For a number of years, Dr. Madan Rambaran of Georgetown Public Hospital and Drs. Jeffry McKinzie and John Paul Rohde of Vanderbilt University discussed the acute shortage of trained emergency medicine physicians in Guyana. The need for specialty-trained physicians has led to this proposal for Guyana’s first Post-Graduate Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program.

Emergency physicians are uniquely trained and capable of caring for patients with a wide spectrum of disease ranging from non-emergent illness to life-threatening emergencies. The specialty of emergency medicine is critical to the sustained development and improvement of comprehensive emergency services and a post-graduate training program will provide specialty-trained physicians dedicated to the field of emergency medicine. The program is 3 years in duration and leads to a Masters Degree in Emergency Medicine from the University of Guyana. The curriculum is based on an American 3 year training model that was reviewed and adapted to the reality in Guyana.

The program was inaugurated on October 1st, 2010.
