Religion
Throughout Egypt's history beliefs and practices were constantly changing though the themes of fertility, rebirth, death and resurrection generally remained constant. The ancient Egyptians had a tendency to merge new beliefs with the old ones rather than simply replace them. This tendency has made it difficult for modern scholars to fully understand the ancient beliefs and, although much is known, there is still much that remains a mystery.

Freedom is following your mind, not others mind...
Doing exactly what you want to do and love... You think you might be free, but if you're not doing what you like exactly, you're not truly free... Most sheople live their lives of desperation, with forced habits of going to a job on Monday and coming home unhappy...
You fear what might happen if you quit your job... That fear creates the bars of our prison-‐- which makes you a f*cking slave for others... You want happiness??? Free yourself to free your mind!!! I'm not saying to do nothing, but what I am saying is, do what you want, not what others want...
True Freedom 101

Do you feel stuck in your life? Do you wonder why? Does something seem wrong, but you can't put your finger on it? In The Lies We Tell Ourselves, psychotherapist Jon Frederickson reveals the ways we fool ourselves and how to get unstuck. Through dozens of stories and examples, he demonstrates that the apparent cause of our problems is almost never the real cause. In addition, he reveals what we really fear and how to face it. In the spirit of Stephen Grosz and Irving Yalom, Frederickson shows how to recognize the lies we tell ourselves and face the truths we have avoided--and stop saying yes when we really mean no. Although we may use falsehoods to escape pain, clinging to our fantasies actually becomes the source of greater suffering. This book shows how to create a better life by letting go of our lies and facing reality. It also demonstrates that therapy is not merely a chat; it is a relationship between two people devoted to facing the deepest truths of our lives so we can be he.

Bayes’ Theorem
First published Sat Jun 28, 2003; substantive revision Tue Sep 30, 2003
Bayes' Theorem is a simple mathematical formula used for calculating conditional probabilities. It figures prominently in subjectivist or Bayesian approaches to epistemology, statistics, and inductive logic. Subjectivists, who maintain that rational belief is governed by the laws of probability, lean heavily on conditional probabilities in their theories of evidence and their models of empirical learning. Bayes' Theorem is central to these enterprises both because it simplifies the calculation of conditional probabilities and because it clarifies significant features of subjectivist position. Indeed, the Theorem's central insight — that a hypothesis is confirmed by any body of data that its truth renders probable — is the cornerstone of all subjectivist methodology.

Here is Friedrich Nietzsche's great masterpiece The Anti-Christ, wherein Nietzsche attacks Christianity as a blight on humanity. This classic is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand Nietzsche and his place within the history of philosophy. "We should not deck out and embellish Christianity: it has waged a war to the death against this higher type of man, it has put all the deepest instincts of this type under its ban, it has developed its concept of evil, of the Evil One himself, out of these instincts-the strong man as the typical reprobate, the 'outcast among men.' Christianity has taken the part of all the weak, the low, the botched; it has made an ideal out of antagonism to all the self-preservative instincts of sound life; it has corrupted even the faculties of those natures that are intellectually most vigorous, by representing the highest intellectual values as sinful, as misleading, as full of temptation. The most lamentable example: the corruption of Pascal, who believed that his intellect had been destroyed by original sin, whereas it was actually destroyed by Christianity!" -Friedrich Nietzsche

People readily categorize things as good or bad, a welcome adaptation that enables action and reduces information overload. The present research reveals an unforeseen consequence: People do not fully appreciate this immediacy of judgment, instead assuming that they and others will consider more information before forming conclusions than they and others actually do. This discrepancy in perceived versus actual information use reveals a general psychological bias that bears particular relevance in today’s information age. Presumably, one hopes that easy access to abundant information fosters uniformly more-informed opinions and perspectives. The present research suggests mere access is not enough: Even after paying costs to acquire and share ever-more information, people then stop short and do not incorporate it into their judgments.

Our museums are not our new cathedrals... They are smart filing cabinets for the art of the past... Our libraries are not our homes for the so-called soul... They are architectural encyclopedias... And if we were to show up at any university humanities department in urgent search of purpose and meaning, or were to break down in a museum gallery in a quest for forgiveness or charity, we would be swiftly removed and possibly handed over to psychiatric authorities...

He was a Jew of Jerusalem, of priestly family, born in A.D. 37 or 38, the first year of Caligula's reign...
We have in Josephus an educated man who writes both Greek and Aramaic with equal skill... It is unfortunate that in general we know nothing of his sources except from his own use of them, so that we are unable to form an estimate of their authority or of the way in which he has handled them... On the other hand we get a clear idea of his attitude, which is not that of the historian who chronicles and explains, but of the apologist who accommodates his facts and the conclusions he draws from them to his own preconceived ideas and theories... His authority, which was very great in ancient and mediaeval times, is now much diminished... He is accused of such daring flights of fancy as the transformation of the Pharisees and Sadducees into philosophical sects who discuss free-will and the immortality of the soul; of wilful omissions, such as that of all reference to the Messianic expectations of the Jews—since he thought it wiser not to draw the attention of the Romans to one of the chief causes which Israel gave them for anxiety; and of interpretations which are obviously and consciously false, such as that which throws the whole responsibility for the revolt on to a few fanatics, so that the Jewish people as a whole may appear blameless in the matter... The figures which he gives are always doubtful, and the dialogues scattered through his pages do not give any greater impression of authenticity than those with which Livy afflicts us... Even with regard to the official documents which he claims to have copied, we have often good grounds for suspecting him of having altered, misinterpreted or actually forged them... Wherever we are in a position to check him we find him allowing himself the most deplorable liberties with his sources... He inspires little confidence even as an eye-witness, being much addicted to exaggeration, a failing in which he indulges with a sort of cynicism, heedless even of absurdity... And lastly, he assumed a burden which was beyond his powers, and the last books of the Antiquities show signs of weariness and a certain slackening in care...
Taken all in all, neither the man nor his work is of the first quality; yet if some misfortune had robbed us of the Antiquities and the Jewish War we should not even be able to attempt a reconstruction of the Grseco-Roman period of Jewish history, for what other documents we possess are of value solely in relation to these works... Also it is only fair to add that Christian scribes have not shown a proper respect for the text, which they have often shamelessly interpolated and also have perhaps deliberately mutilated... It is a pity that we do not possess, side by side with the works of Josephus, those of his enemy Justus ben Pistos, known as Justus of Tiberias... He too wrote a history of the Jewish war, and composed a Chronicle extending from the time of Moses to that of Agrippa II... These books were still known to Photius in the ninth century, but they have not come down to us... Even more valuable perhaps would be the works of Nicholas of Damascus, tutor to the children of Antony and Cleopatra, and a friend of Herod the Great, which were Josephus's main source outside the Bible... But these have perished, together with the writings of Timogenes of Alexandria, Posidonius of Apamaea and others whose loss we equally deplore...
Now and again we get a little help from some other Greek or Latin author, whom I shall mention as occasion arises... Epigraphy and papyrology relate only to Egyptian Judaism, but they sometimes provide instructive comparisons and should not be ignored in studying the Palestinian world... And finally the Rabbinical literature furnishes us with occasional information about the political history of the time, information which we must always make use of with caution....

GoryYogi will die and won’t serve any purpose any more; the something will remain and will provide good seed... As for you, stop flaunting your concepts: they are based on majority fantasy and some illusions... But instead, living like this, I feel happy in the knowledge that I am different from those around me, that I see things with a different eye to theirs, that I know how to appreciate or suffer from the world in my own way... And I feel myself superior... I prefer being the obscure, isolated figure hoping for the victory that will see his name on everyone’s lips rather than being one of the pack just following the destiny of a group... And you certainly can’t say that this kind of behavior of mine is accommodating... I may be somewhat accommodating in life, I’ll let myself be carried away passively in the course of my actions, but I will not prostitute my great art... Eh, am I not good??? Thx for observing... Peace Out!!!

Infantilizing distraction from real reality...
Criticism has whittled away the so-called evidential value of religious documents, natural science and our real reality has shown up the major errors in them...
"Except ye ... become as little children, ye shall not enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matt. 18: 3 ) "For of such is the kingdom of heaven"! (Matt. 11: 14 )
Little children have such childish simplicity and credulity, -- believing in Santa Claus, fairies, elves, and ghosts in full faith... When they have grown into adult child-mindedness, the Holy Ghost, Yahveh, and Jesus Fooking Christ are added to their holy so-called faith...
Aristotle's childish belief that vermin are developed out of dung (a belief to which ignorant sheople still cling) was delusional...
Sigmund Freud
The twentieth century, the attack on religion was given a psychoanalytic spin... Sigmund Freud suggests that the grand aspirations of religion to mere illusions, but, even worse, the illusions of an insecure immature mind of one who has never properly grown up...

MAID became legal in Canada in June 2016, with the passage of Bill C-14, which amended the Criminal Code and other federal acts with respect to medical assistance in dying. Federal legislation sets out eligibility criteria for those who wish to apply for MAID, as well as the safeguards that a doctor or nurse practitioner must follow to legally provide medical assistance in dying.
In May 2017, Ontario's Medical Assistance in Dying Statute Law Amendment Act, 2017, received Royal Assent and came into force. It made amendments to various Ontario statutes to provide greater clarity and legal protection for health care providers (including institutions and clinicians) as well as patients navigating medical assistance in dying, and established a new role for the coroner in overseeing medically assisted deaths.

On March 17, 2021, the Government of Canada announced that changes to Canada’s medical assistance in dying (MAID) law are officially in force. The new law includes changes to eligibility, procedural safeguards, and the framework for the federal government’s data collection and reporting regime.

Everyone and their TV commercial wants you to believe that the key to a good life is a nicer job, or a more rugged car, or a prettier girlfriend, or a hottub with an inflatable pool for the kids... The world is constantly telling you that the path to a better life is more, more, more—buy more, own more, make more, have more, be more. You are constantly bombarded with messages to give a fook about everything, all the time... Give a fook about a new TV... Give a fook about having a better vacation than your friends/coworkers... Give a fook about buying that new golf cart... Give a fook about having the right kind of holiday lights...
Why??? They say: because giving a fook about more stuff is good for fooking business...
And while there’s nothing wrong with good fooking business, the problem is that giving too many fooks is bad for your mental health... It causes you to become overly attached to the superficial and fake, to dedicate your life to chasing a mirage of happiness and satisfaction... The key to a good life is not giving a fook about more; it’s giving a fook about less, giving a fook about only what is true and immediate and important...

In Marx’s view, a society built on exploitation could not long endure because the oppressed majority would eventually recognize its exploitation... As conditions worsened, the working class would realize the inequity of prevailing economic arrangements and their source in man-made doctrines and practices... When this occurred, Marx expected an uprising, the seizure of power on behalf of the previously oppressed majority and the creation of a new, more just and humane social order... In this new world, humankind would reclaim its proper place as the maker of its own destiny, and all the artificial doctrines developed to support the dethroned system—including religion—would be consigned to the “dustbin of history...” Religion, which had persisted because of intolerable social conditions, would simply evaporate with these social transformations...

The fact remains, however, that fanaticism of any kind, especIally religious fanaticism, has clearly produced and in all probability will continue to produce enormous amounts of bickering, fighting, violence, bloodshed, homicide, feuds, wars, genocide, and constant delusional mentality... For all its so-called peace-inviting potential, therefore, arrant (not to mention arrogant) religiosity has led to immense individual and social harm by fomenting an incredible amount of antihuman and antihumane aggression... It can therefore be concluded that anger-attacking and peace-loving religious views that are held undevoutly and unrigidly, as well as similar views that are held by nonreligionists and antireligionists, probably serve humankind far better than religiosity-inspired so-called peace efforts...

It’s worth highlighting two important cognitive biases that we can look to avoid as we put together our own world... One is our tendency to give higher credences to propositions that we want to be true... This can show up at a very personal level, as what’s known as self-serving bias: when something good happens, we think it’s because we are talented and deserving, while bad things are attributed to unfortunate luck or uncontrollable external circumstances... At a broader level, we naturally gravitate toward theories of the world that somehow flatter ourselves, make us feel important, or provide us with comfort...
The other bias is our preference for preserving our planet of belief, rather than changing it around... This can also show up in many ways... Confirmation bias is our tendency to latch on to and highlight any information that confirms beliefs we already have, while disregarding evidence that may throw our beliefs into question... This tendency is so strong that it leads to the backfire effect—show someone evidence that contradicts what they believe, and studies show that they will usually come away holding their initial belief even more strongly... We cherish our beliefs, and work hard to protect them against outside threats...
"As a matter of empirical fact, there are a number of important, common beliefs that almost everyone shares... Most people believe that reason and logic play an important role in finding real truth... If we try to be as honest as possible with others and with ourselves, we can hope to bring our world of belief into closer alignment..."

I just wanted to take a moment to wish you and your families a happy Thanksgiving...
I have a lot to be thankful for, but I am especially grateful for the time and effort that you and our volunteers put into the fight for the separation of religion from any government...
Thank you for your dedication to the principles we stand for... I can't thank you enough for your awareness...
So many of us get tangled in the material, but we should strive to focus on intent, dedication, and love for humanity...
I am supremely fortunate to have friends and family who love and support me... I know that many members of our society sacrifice so much -- losing jobs, family, and support networks -- when they tell the real truth about their atheism and naturalism...
My hope is that through the continued work of people like you, being vocal about your atheism and reminding everyone that atheists are all around them, the journey to authenticity and openness gets easier with each passing year...
Your awareness helps makes that possible... Your passion, dedication, and contribution make our road a bit smoother for the next person/generation to walk it and live it...
Thank you for all you do...
From myself, my family, and everyone in Canada, Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Started in 2013, Orange Shirt Day helps increase awareness of the effects of Residential Schools on Indigenous Communities in Canada. The name comes from the story of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad. On her first day of residential school at 6 years old, she had her orange shirt taken from her, a gift from her grandmother. This shirt was a symbol for a much bigger system at play. Indigenous children were taken from their families and were stripped of the culture that was theirs.
Orange Shirt Day helps to continue the conversation and efforts around reconciliation. Those who have suffered tell their stories and continue to heal. For the rest of us it’s about supporting our Indigenous brothers and sisters that have been affected and to remind ourselves that Every Child Matters.
In 2017, Member of Parliament, Georgina Jolibois submitted private member’s bill C-361 calling for a national holiday. The bill passed through the House of Commons on March 21, 2019 but never made it through the Senate before the next election was called.
On September 29, 2020, Canada’s Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault tabled bill C-5 proposing that Orange Shirt Day become a national statutory holiday, similar to the previous bill by Georgina Jolibois. The new holiday would be officially named the “National Day for Truth and Reconciliation”. On May 28, 2021, the day after 215 children’s bodies were discovered in an unmarked cemetery on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, all parties in the House of Commons agreed to fast-track the bill and it passed in the House of Commons by unanimous consent. The bill passed the Senate unanimously six days later and received royal assent on June 3, 2021.
This September 30th, we ask that you take some time to learn about the history of residential schools and work towards ensuring something like this never happens again. A great place to start is reading the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action. We also encourage you to take action by sending a letter to the Prime Minister and asking him to make reconciliation an urgent priority for the new government. Finally, we ask that you wear an orange shirt to show solidary with our Indigenous communities.
To learn more about the history of Orange Shirt Day or how you can take further action towards reconciliation, please review the statement from the Canadian Labour Congress which includes a variety of links and resources.

This discussion is complicated by the presence of multiple incompatible notions of what is meant by “faith...” A dictionary might define it as “trust” or “confidence” in a belief, but it will go on to offer meanings along the lines of “belief without justification...”
The New Testament (Hebrews 11:1) says:
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen...” For many, faith is simply a firm conviction in their religious beliefs... The word “faith” is highly charged, and this isn’t the place to argue over how it should be defined... Let us merely note that sometimes faith is taken as something that is absolutely certain...
Consider these statements from the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
• The faithful receive with docility the teachings and directives that their pastors give them in different forms...
• To obey (from the Latin obâ•‚audire, to “hear or listen to”) in faith is to submit freely to the word that has been heard, because its truth is guaranteed by god, who is Truth itself...
Abraham is the model of such obedience offered us by Sacred Scripture... The Virgin Mary is its most perfect embodiment...
• Faith is certain... It is more certain than all human knowledge because it is founded on the very word of god who cannot lie...
For Humanity:
"To declares certain would be regarded as demented, someone who declared the opposite of what the religious person affirms, would not........"

In the late 1990s, a controversy arose about a “Statement on Teaching Evolution” adopted by the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) in the United States:
The diversity of life on earth is the result of evolution: an unsupervised, impersonal, unpredictable and natural process of temporal descent with genetic modification that is affected by natural selection, chance, historical contingencies and changing environments...
The controversial bit was the inclusion of the words “unsupervised” and “impersonal...” It was thought by some that this characterization went beyond the merely scientific, to pass judgment on questions that belonged to the sphere of religion... Two prominent theologians, Alvin Plantinga and Huston Smith, wrote a letter to the NABT, arguing that this encroachment would backfire by “lower[ing] Americans’ respect for scientists and their place in our culture...” The thought was presumably that in any perceived conflict between science and religion, Americans will always choose religion... Plantinga and Smith urged the board of directors to amend the statement to delete “unsupervised” and “impersonal...” After some debate, the board agreed, and those words were dropped from the statement in future publications...
One can argue about the political wisdom of such a move, but the original wording of the NABT statement was scientifically appropriate...The theory of evolution describes an unsupervised and impersonal process.......
"The question is whether humanity will choose reason over faith, observation over revelation, and science over religion..."
Peace Out!!!

When you realize that you are holding two beliefs that are in conflict with each other, psychologists refer to the resulting discomfort as cognitive dissonance...
It’s a sign that there is something not completely structurally sound about your planet of belief... Unfortunately, human beings are extremely good at maintaining the basic makeup of their planets, even under very extreme circumstances...
Leon Festinger, an American social psychologist who was the founder of cognitive-dissonance theory, and his collaborators once studied an apocapocalyptic cult led by a woman named Dorothy Martin (known to generations of psychology students by the pseudonym Marian Keech)... Following Martin’s lead, members of her group became convinced that the Earth was going to be destroyed on December 21, 1954, but that the true believers would be rescued by aliens the night before... The cult members were extremely serious; they quit their jobs, left their families, and huddled together to await the big day... Festinger was curious as to how they would react when—as his own planet of belief led him to surmise—nothing special happened on the appointed day... Would they, confronted with the unassailable fact that their leader’s prophecy had been incorrect, change their minds about her mystical powers???
The day came and went—and afterward, the believers were more convinced of Martin’s prophetic ability than ever......

Carl Sagan, who introduced so many people to the wonders of the cosmos, died in 1996... At an event in 2003, his wife, Ann Druyan, was asked about him... Her response is worth quoting at length:
When my husband died, because he was so famous and known for not being a believer, many people would come up to me—it still sometimes happens—and ask me if Carl changed at the end and converted to a belief in an afterlife... They also frequently ask me if I think I will see him again... Carl faced his death with unflagging courage and never sought refuge in illusions... The tragedy was that we knew we would never see each other again... I don’t ever expect to be reunited with Carl... But, the great thing is that when we were together, for nearly twenty years, we lived with a vivid appreciation of how brief and precious life is... We never trivialized the meaning of death by pretending it was anything other than a final parting... Every single moment that we were alive and we were together was miraculous—not miraculous in the sense of inexplicable or supernatural... We knew we were beneficiaries of chance. . . . That pure chance could be so generous and so kind. . . . That we could find each other, as Carl wrote so beautifully in Cosmos, you know, in the vastness of space and the immensity of time. . . . That we could be together for twenty years... That is something which sustains me and it’s much more meaningful. . . .
The way he treated me and the way I treated him, the way we took care of each other and our family, while he lived... That is so much more important than the idea I will see him someday... I don’t think I’ll ever see Carl again... But I saw him... We saw each other... We found each other in the cosmos, and that was wonderful..........

Scientific work is the only road which can lead us to a knowledge of reality outside ourselves... The greater the number of men to whom the treasures of knowledge become accessible, the more widespread is the falling-away from religious belief... Everyday we learn things which we were ignorant of the day before, and thus we should grow in knowledge...
