Charpy Impact Test

An impact testing machine is shown in the diagram

below. Impact testing tests for toughness. A striker / pendulum is released

from a pre-determined height. It strikes and breaks the specimen. A

pointer indicates the height of the follow through after breaking, thus

determining the energy absorbed in breaking the specimen.

Charpy method:

The specimen is held horizontally, clamped at both ends.
