What is this GIPEDI Internship ?
The Global Internship Program in Engineering Design and Innovation for the Electrical Sciences is coordinated by Prof.Subrat Kar, Professor, Department of Electrical Engg & Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology and Management / Airtel IIT Delhi Center of Excellence in Telecommunication (AICET) in IIT Delhi - it runs throughout the year in four batches under the aegis of the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT - see www.fitt-iitd.org).
Batch 1 is four months long and runs in Spring (Jan 15-May 15) - you must spend a minimum of 120 days in this batch.
Batch 2 is two months long and runs in Summer (May 15-Jul 15) - you need to stay for a minimum of 45 days in this batch starting from the Orientation day.
Batch 3 is five months long and runs in the Fall Semester (Jul 15 - Dec 15) - you must spend a minimum of 120 days in this batch.
Batch 4 is one month long and runs in winter (Dec 15-Jan 15) - you must stay for a minimum of one month in this batch.
It presently operates only in the areas of Electrical Sciences which include Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Science and Engg, Instrumentation, Information Technology and allied areas such as Electronic Telecommunication Engg. Besides this, inter-disciplinary projects in Electrical Sciences which are executed by students from other disciplines / faculty from other disciplines (for example, projects in engine control in Automotive Engg done with faculty from EE and Mechanical Engg) are also welcome provided the projects are oriented to the domain of Electrical Sciences. Such projects in allied areas may be conducted in any Department of IIT Delhi preferably with one Faculty member from the Electrical Sciences and the other Faculty member from the other Department.
The GIPEDI is a program of IIT Delhi, run by FITT - see gipedi.iitd.ac.in on IIT Delhi's website.
Who is eligible to apply ?
Any qualified Engineer / professional (MCA / Diploma) who wishes to work in the area of Electrical Sciences (Electronics / Electrical / Computer Science & Engg / Instrumentation / IT and allied electrical sciences) is eligible for the Returnship, Gap Internship, and Reverse Internship. In this case, a NOC is not necessary unless you are employed (in which case, a NOC from the Employer may be filed along with the Application).
Any Indian or foreign student (*) is eligible to apply for the Internship. We will consider all engineering, science and students from allied areas provided their research area and the topic of work stated in the Statement of Purpose is in the area of Electrical Sciences where at least one or more faculty members of IIT Delhi from a relevant Department have a research interest.
There are three categories of students who may apply:
(a) Category A : Meritorious but financially needy students (read the Terms and Conditions of the GIPEDI for full details and to see if you qualify.)
If satisfactory and acceptable documentary proof of financial need is submitted along with the Part A of the application form, then Application Fees will be waived.
Please note that the selection process is need-blind - that your financial need does not negatively affect your selection process.
Also, if you get selected, not being able to pay will NOT lead to non-acceptance. If selected, you will be supported financially.
(b) Category B : Meritorious students who have excelled and have been recognized in a MoU / National Scheme
(i) Category B.1: Students already selected in IIT Delhi's own Summer Research Fellowship Program (only those selected with full Fellowship - i.e. currently the first 20 students)
(ii) Category B.2: Students who have been selected in IISc-DST Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (through IIT Bombay)
(iii) Category B.3: Students selected in KVPY Summer Camp program
(iv) Category B.4: Students selected by the Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), Bangalore as IASc Summer Research Fellows
(v) Category B.5: Students selected under IITD-IISc-IITB-ISP CUSAT PHOCOS Research Alliance
(vi) Category B.6: Students who have been selected under the NTSE Exam of NCERT
(vii) Category B.7 to B.12 - Special categories (see 2.8 below)
(c) Category C : Self-supported students
(i) Category C.1 : Self-supported Indian Students
(ii) Category C.2: Self-supported foreign students (see definition below)
(d) Category D : Paying / Self-supported students who have graduated already
(i) Category D.1 : Returning Professionals
(ii) Category D.2 : Gap internships
(iii) Category D.3 : Reverse Internships
(e) Category S : Special Category students
(i) Category S.1 : Affirmative Action - Returnships for Women
(ii) Category S.2 : Affirmative Action - Special Initiatives
I am a student of the <>th semester, can I apply ?
Yes, technically, you can. But please give the following advice a careful reading.
Every student is (wrongly) advised by seniors to go for a internship at the earliest opportunity. Senior students often tell junior students (wrongly) that grades don't count, and that projects are all that matter. They are wrong. Grades count - we look at your grades very carefully when we select you for the Internship. But we do not look only at grades, we look at many other things, such as your Statement of Purpose, your initiatives, your goals and how you have worked towards achieving them.
The best time to go for a Internship is in the summer following Semester 6 + Semester 7 (nearly 9 months), or the whole of Semester 7 + winter + Semester 8 (almost a year). Without doing your discipline courses in Semesters 6 and 7, you could be very badly prepared for any internship.
Please try to follow the advice below when you choose your Internship period:
Should I go abroad for an Internship ? I don't see the benefit of doing a Internship in my Institute ? I have heard that a internship done in a good Institute is worth more than anything else I can do in my Institute ?
Go to a place where your area of interest is encouraged - whether that happens to be your own Institute or some other Institute (whether in India or abroad).
There are several advantages to doing your project / Internship in your own Institute. See the Table in the previous answer where some of these advantages are listed.
Who is a foreign student ? Does an Indian student studying in a foreign university qualify as an Indian student ?
The University which issues the No-Objection Certificate is the registering Institute for our purposes.
Any student who holds a non-indian passport and is currently registered in a foreign university OR Indian university (recognized by AICTE/UGC/MHRD) for a full/part-time course of study is a foreign student. Thus, a non-Indian passport holder registered in a recognized Indian institute will be considered a foreign applicant.
Any student who holds an Indian passport and/or is registered in an Indian University is an Indian student. Any student who holds an Indian passport and is registered in a foreign university is a foreign student.
All Foreign Students will be registered in IIT Delhi as Visiting Students - see rules given in http://www.iitd.ac.in/pg/pdf/vis-stu1v3.0.doc . This allows the Foreign Student to do any course and gain academic credits in IIT Delhi. Please note that there is a separate tuition fee which Visiting Students have to pay IIT Delhi which is separate from the fees they gave to pay the GIPEDI Program.
How is the GIPEDI Internship Program different from the IIT Delhi Summer Research Fellowship (see the IITDSRF Announcement for 2014) ?
Apart from the technical project work (which is the same as that of the IITD Summer Fellow Scheme), we train interns in soft skills - communication, leadership, etiquette etc. We also have trips and heritage walks and, perhaps, a little bit more scope for enjoying soft skills in the internship.
Also, if you have been selected in the IIT Delhi Summer Fellowship scheme, we will waive all fees and accept you in the GIPEDI program. This is called 'secondment' and requires you to fill the Secondment Form that is part of the GIPEDI Application Form.
Why does the GIPEDI have a lot of all this other stuff like soft skills / I only want do a project without all this botheration of upgrading my soft skills ?
Doing a 'technical project' is only half the story. The GIPEDI philosophy is that producing a rounded off individual is a better to get team members, rather than just polish technical skills. That is the way it is - please apply for other Internships and not to GIPEDI if you don't agree with this.
Are there other ways of interning at IIT Delhi - other than the GIPEDI ?
Yes. There are at least three other ways of interning at IIT Delhi. GIPEDI is one of the oldest but it is only one of the more popular and established Internships.
Many students enquire if there is any other way of doing a Internship (making statements like 'I could be informally attached to you', 'I won't take much of your time','I want to just have some guidance from you without any certificate or without using any facilities of IIT Delhi '). Please note that we do not entertain such requests. It is not as per norms of IIT Delhi to have private training arrangements such as these - this is so because IITD resources are being used in servicing such requests even if that resource happens to be the professional time of the faculty member (which is paid for by IIT Delhi).
Incidentally, if your Institute has a policy forbidding you from participating in "Paid Internships", you may apply to the GIPEDI (application fees will be charged) and then join as a Visiting Student of IIT Delhi if selected. Please note that this does not entitle you to accomodation on-campus.
How much will it cost ?
The exact fees are given in the Application Form for Printout for exact fees. The following waivers apply
* (please see the Application Form for Printout for exact fees and mode of payment)
How do I apply ?
Due to the COVID situation, GIPEDI applications can be submitted by email. Please see instructions on the first page of the website .
All students (self-supported or KVPY or IITD SRF) will both fill a application form online and submit a hard-copy in the prescribed format by mail (this format can be obtained online
at http://sites.google.com/site/gipediinterns/application-form-for-printout/
OR
by email from uaswal@gmail.com - please email only if everything else does not work, the response is dependent on workload).
For the hardcopy which is to be forwarded by post, the following rules apply:
Self-supported applicants need to have the hard-copy of their application (along with the processing fees) forwarded through their Training and Placement Cell.
No direct applications from self-supported students will be entertained. They must be forwarded by the TPO , with the seal of the T&P Section of the concerned student or the Liaison Faculty of that Institute. Nobody's signature will be accepted in lieu of the TPO's - specifically, we will not accept signatures from Heads of Depts, Faculty member in charge of Training & Placement at Dept level, other Faculty members, Heads of Institutes such as Directors / Principals (unless they are also the TPO themselves).
If there is more than one applicant from the same Institution in the self-supported category without a pre-identified faculty mentor in IITD, the Training & Placement Cell has to get in touch with the Coordinator (Prof.S.Kar) by email for the details of the selection procedure (described below in the next paragraph) to be followed at the local Institution before names are forwarded to the Coordinator,GIPEDI.
It is suggested that after T&P issues a NOC, the Liaison Faculty (if there is one) or the Training & Placement Officer (TPO) must conduct a internal selection, counsel students on their project interests for a best-match and then forward a consolidated merit list of all the student applicants from the Institute to the Coordinator of the GIPEDI Program (all applications and the Consolidated Merit List could be enclosed and forwarded in a single envelope).
If a student from a Institute is selected to GIPEDI by being selected through another Fellowship (say IASc Summer Fellowship) , then he/she need not be evaluated by the TPO for the Consolidated Merit List (note however that the NOC from TPO is still needed in GIPEDI Application Part A) - this applicant will be considered under the 'secondment option' and needs to only submit the filled Application Part A and B along (specially, the Secondment Certificate in Part B).
Only the following Institutes / organisations have a liaison faculty at the moment with the GIPEDI (see below).
Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) students (KVPY Fellows and Summer Camp students; also, please read the additional information in the line below pertaining to KVPY Summer Camp students) must route the hard-copy of their applications through the KVPY Office at IIT Bombay / IISc. They will pay no application handling charge and no application fee whenever they apply.
[NOTE : KVPY Summer Camp students pay no application fee and no operational fee only when they come in the summer (Batch 2 of any year). In all other internship periods, they pay full operational fees and application fees as other students. ]
IIT Delhi Summer Research Fellows / Indian Academy of Sciences Fellows may send a hard-copy of their application directly along with the acceptance letter they received from IIT Delhi / Indian Academy of Sciences Coordinator. They pay no application handling charge and no application fee.
[Affirmative action for students interested in Photonics Research]
Students applying in the area of Photonics under Photonic Circuits and Optical Systems (PhoCOS) Research Alliance of IISc-IITB-ISPCUSATmay send a hard-copy of their application directly along with the acceptance letter they received from IIT Delhi. They pay no application handling charge and may apply to be re-imbursed their internship fee.
There is a National Scholarship called National Photonics Fellowship (DIT Photonics Fellowship) in the Photonics area which is available. Applicants in the Photonics Area are advised to watch this space for details. Please do not send enquiries to the Coordinator on this national scholarship - all details are available on www.photonicsindia.org.
How do I choose a Faculty Mentor ? Also: I don't know anybody in IIT Delhi ?
You only choose a area in which you want to work. Then you write a meaningful Statement of Purpose about what exactly is the problem you want to work within that area. Once your application is received, we will circulate it to all likely Faculty working that particular area - then they will be requested to choose you.
You don't have to choose a Faculty Mentor at the time of application. But if you have been working with a Faculty Member of IIT Delhi from before, or if you wish to work with a particular Faculty Member, you are welcome to get in touch with that Faculty Member beforehand. Usually, good students get in touch with faculty 12-18 months (1 to 1 1/2 years!) before the actual date of application. This allows the Faculty Member to plan your presence and role in a research project.
If you have not got in touch with any faculty member, please do not put his/her name in your Application Form without her permission. If you do put a Faculty Member's name without any pre-agreement, we will circulate your application only to that Faculty Member and ask him/her to fill in the Consent form. If he/she refuses to do so (which is equivalent to saying they do not want to mentor you), we will reject your application.
If the Faculty Member agrees to mentor you, he/she must
read what the GIPEDI expects of a Faculty Mentor ( https://sites.google.com/site/gipediinterns/guidelines-for-facilitators )
sign your form at the proper place
fill in the Faculty Consent form which tells the GIPEDI Coordinator why he/she is choosing you (if you fill in the Faculty Member's name, we will do this for you)
What is a Statement of Purpose ? What is the content expected inside a Statement of purpose ? Can there be two or more purposes mentioned inside my SoP to increase my chances of getting selected ?
(Related Question - What is the Personal Essay ?)
The SoP describes in crisp detail, the exact technical domain / area and the nature of the unique problem you wish to work on during your Internship. You must appreciate that writing a good SoP assumes that you have been reading up on the problem for the past year or so, that you have discussed the problem, that you have completed some inital exploratory work on the problem already and that you have been attending talks, reading papers on that problem and have been writing to people working on the problem for about a semester before.
Writing a winning SoP+Statement of Projects+Personal Essay can take upto 3~4 weeks so be prepared for many re-writes.
It is important that you understand that you don't just sit down one day and write a superlative SoP. Nor do you just copy someone else's SoP and submit it. We do not have team projects assigned at the application stage so every SoP is expected to be unique at this stage. We are not looking for a general SoP, we are looking for a technical SoP so some amount of prior work must have already been put in by you. The content of the SOP depends on you, since it describes in exact terms the single particular problem which YOU wish to work in during your Internship. If you don't know what you want to work on, then one of the ways to find out is to defer your Internship and do some more coursework and find out in the process what is the exact problem you want to work on.
Facing problems like writer's block in writing a SOP is usually a sign that you don't yet know what you want to do. Go back and prepare yourself through more preparatory reading till you can write your SoP.
It is a contradiction and counter-intuitive if you have more than one purpose in your Statement of Purpose (it is not a Statement of Purposes). If you do mention more than one purpose, we will just assume you have no clear purpose at all in coming for the GIPEDI and take the first purpose mentioned as your purpose for all administrative purposes.
(Related Question - What is the Personal Essay ? The Statement of Purpose is a technical statement. The Personal Essay tells us about you as a person, your aspirations, your thoughts, what you want to be - it helps us understand those facets of you which a academic trabscript would not normally bring out.)
Do you have a checklist for the Application Process ?
See this site FAQ for answers to most questions you might have.
Submit a hardcopy of the Application Form
Download the PDF hardcopy of the Application Form from this site.
Print it back-to-back on A4 sized white pages.
Fill it in by typing n information in typewriter mode of Adobe Reader (you can also fill it clearly by hand). Photos can be inserted using the "insert object" mode (or stuck manually using glue)
Enclose a signed copy the following:
Demand Draft for Application Handling Fees
NOC (from TPO or authorized nominee of TPO) from your Institute that they have no objection to you taking up this training on the specified terms.
Statement of purpose (in the Application Form). If enclosed on a separate sheet, this needs to be signed by you.
Letter of Recommendation in the prescribed GIPEDI format - LoRs on a separate letterhead will not do because they do not cover the same range of inputs about you.
If there is more than one applicant from your Institute, the Letter of Selection from your Training & Placement specifying that a selection was conducted enclosing the merit-list of students based on their performance in the selection.
[Consent of Faculty Supervisor in IIT Delhi]
If you have already received consent from your prospective Faculty Supervisor in IIT Delhi, then obtain his/her signature in the Application Form.

Ensure that if there is any commitment of a stipend to you, the Faculty Member should fill in the amount, source of funds and disbursal method in the Application Form and sign it.
You may send the completed application with this item remaining to be filled in by the Faculty Member. The Faculty member may fill in this information and submit the form in FITT. Note however, that the form must be complete (and with the Demand Draft for handling charges enclosed) in all aspects before it reaches the Faculty Member as we will refuse to accept forms which are incomplete even if the Faculty Member submits the form on your behalf.
If there is no identified Faculty Supervisor, you may leave this item blank. We will try to match your background with a suitable Faculty Supervisor.
Fill the same information online and submit it. Please note that the application process is not complete till your signed hardcopy reaches us by post.
Sign the application form and post it only to the address given in the instruction.
Do not send it to the Coordinator of GIPEDI or to any other address other than the one specified.
Do not scan and send it by email - the scanned copy will not be processed until the hardcopy is received.

Even though I want to apply, my Training & Placement Office has several requirements such as Daily Project Diary, a prescribed marking / grading structure, feedback about project work to be done in a certain feedback specific to my Institute, a certain number of evaluations to be carried out - can I expect that the Coordinator of GIPEDI will oblige by conforming to these requirements ?OR Can GIPEDI be a substitute for my Final Year project in my home Institute ?
NO.
Only the attendance record will be signed and furnished to your Institute and the Certificate of Completion in our prescribed format will be given to your Institute. Apart from that, your Institute may conduct its own evaluations separately. The NOC which is issued by your University recommending that you be accepted into the GIPEDI Program implies that your Training and Placement Officer has gone through the terms and conditions of the GIPEDI Program and considers it an an exact replacement for their own prescribed processes.
Also, the Coordinator of the GIPEDI is not obliged to participate in any of your project's Internal Training evaluations of your Institute as either an external / invited expert. We will try to cooperate and provide support as a courtesy measure but it shall not be obligatory for us to participate or fulfil in any component of the Internship which has to be evaluated by your parent Institute. For example, if a Faculty Member from your parent institute is required to visit / stay / evaluate any component of your Internship, it shall not be obligatory for IIT Delhi to provide accomodation / evaluation rooms / travel support / hospitality / daily allowances etc - though, as a matter of courtesy, we shall try our best to provide such support to the level possible.
Any part of your work which is considered classified/ confidential / proprietary or is performed under a non-disclosure agreement must be expunged from your submitted Project Report if so advised by your Supervisor or the Coordinator, GIPEDI.
GRADING POLICY: Sometimes the Institute of the Intern expects a grade to be made available for rating performance. Such a grade is not made available for Internships, unless (a) the student is also simultaneously registered as a Visiting Student of IIT Delhi (b) has registered in the advised MTech project of IIT Delhi. This ensures that the Project done is evaluated along with all projects in IIT Delhi.
Therefore, GIPEDI is not a substitute for the Final Year project unless you register as a Visiting Student of IIT Delhi and then apply for GIPEDI. Please note that registering as a Visiting Student of IIT Delhi is governed by separate procedures and rules of the Undergraduate Section of IIT Delhi. You are advised to get in touch with the Assistant Registrar (UG) for the relevant rules (http://www.iitd.ac.in/pg/pdf/vis-stu1v3.0.doc ). This registration as a Visiting Student allows to do any course and gain academic credits in IIT Delhi. Please note that there is a separate tuition fee which Visiting Students have to pay IIT Delhi which is separate from the fees they gave to pay the GIPEDI Program. If you are registered as a Visiting Student, joining GIPEDI is optional - you can do your UG/PG project without joining GIPEDI.
Plus:
The BTech project in IIT Delhi consists of a pair of courses called BTech Project part 1 and BTech Project Part 2 over two semesters.
Similarly, MTech project in IIT Delhi consists of a pair of courses called MTech Project part 1 and MTech Project Part 2 over two semesters.
Visiting students intending to do their BTech / MTech final year projects must register for the appropriate courses as above. They will then be evaluated by the appropriate Committee of IIT Delhi.
The IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) for your BTech/MTech project work and any publications / patents / products resulting therefrom will belong to your Supervisor(s) in IITD and to IIT Delhi.
There is no obligation on IIT Delhi to accept any Faculty Member from your parent Institute as a co-Supervisor
BTech/MTech thesis (and the ideas / matter contained therein) submitted to IIT Delhi cannot be ALSO submitted elsewhere - specifically, it cannot ALSO be submitted in parallel to your parent Institute.
you may only apply for a credit transfer to your parent Institute from the grades you get here.
If you register as a Visiting Student and then join the GIPEDI program to do your Final Project, we will need to have you registered in the relevant MTech Project course (12 credits for Part 2 and 6 credits for Part 1) of the Department you have joined. Also, please note that grading is based on the following policy:
A : This is one of the best projects we have seen in the past 2 years
A(-) : This is a very very good project but not one of the best we have seen in the past 2 years
B : This is a very good project but there is scope for improvement in either originality, innovation or scope
B(-) : This is a good project but there is some scope for improvement in either originality, innovation or scope
C : This is a average / fair work but is lacking in either originality, innovation or scope
C(-) : This is a average / fair work but lacks significantly in either originality, innovation or scope
D : This is a bad project
E : This is a very bad project
F : This project work must be repeated
When will I be intimated about the results i.e whether I am selected for the GIPEDI or not ?
The results will be available with
FITT Office (Uttam Aswal 011-26597164 uttamaswal@hotmail.com) or from the
Course Secretary - Ms. Sagarika DuttaBishwas 011-26596250
Please contact either of them after the indicated deadlines.
I will be applying to other Universities (abroad) for higher studies later. Will I get a letter / letter on the IIT Delhi letterhead / recommendation letter / from the GIPEDI or not ?
All Interns who complete the minimum requirements of the Internship will get a Certificate of Completion and Certificate of Attendance (which certifies their duration of stay and dates of arrival / departure). This letter will carry the (disclosable) details of the project they did here.
Some (and only some) exceptional Interns who perform original work will be issued a Letter of Recommendation as a testimonial asking that they be accepted to academic programs / project teams in other Institutes / organizations. This Letter of Recommendation cannot be requested by the Intern, it will only be given by the Coordinator if the internship work merits it. This Letter of Recommendation is an accolade / recognition which records our conviction that the individual being recommended has done exceptional / praiseworthy work which exceeded all expectations.
I am already a graduate / I graduated recently. Can I still do the internship ?
Graduates don't do internships, they do jobs. An intern must be registered in a recognized and appropriate academic program in an academic Institution, either in India or abroad.
If you are a graduate and are not registered in a academic program, then you do not qualify for a Internship but you may apply for a Gap Internship, Returnship, Flexinternship or Reverse Internship - please read the Application Form for details about these options.
You may apply as a Staff Member against advertisements for specific positions which are periodically put up at the IIT Delhi website http://ird.iitd.ac.in/vaccancies.html .
Why was my application not accepted for the GIPEDI program ?
We receive a large number of excellent applications for the GIPEDI Program. While we do look at the academic performance as one of the markers, the selection process is comprehensive and depends strongly on your Statement of Purpose, Statement of Projects executed and the quality of your essay along with the availability of a Faculty Mentor. Openings are always limited and some very good applications cannot often be accepted due to one or more reasons like the ones below.
There are several reasons for non-acceptance. Some of the typical ones are :
We hope that you ensured that your application was complete in all aspects. Any incomplete section or entry makes your application liable to be not accepted. A missing photograph, missing date of birth, missing name of institute or program, incomplete entries, missing data, unstated areas of interest or multiple areas of interest stated (you are expected to state only one), no local address for stay, not having your application forwarded by your TPO or having someone other than your TPO forward it (see point 4 below), no Consolidated Merit List enclosed by TPO when there are more than 2 applicants from the same organisation - all of these can be potential grounds on which your application can be rejected.
Your SoP had problems such as
(a) No definite technical area / purpose stated (example: "I want to work in microcontrollers" is bad, it is preferable to state "I wish to work on the problem of X and of doing Y in n-bit microcontrollers such as the Z family")
(b) No strong purpose indicated in the Statement of Purpose / no coherent timeline or background activity demonstrated to support the purpose which is described
(c) Routine / run-of-the-mill / non-innovative / generic projects described in the Statement of Projects
(d) Personal Essay on contribution is routine, and devoid of greater objectives and uninspiring
(e) if any of the above was copied in part from other sources / other applications
Though you were a C.1 / self-supported syudent, you had no local address where you could stay.
Your TPO did not sign the Application in the space allotted (this indicates a written compliance with the Terms and Cnditions of the GIPEDI)
/ your TPO signed the NOC but imposed conditions that you had exams etc due to which you could not join on time
/ your TPO signed the NOC but the verification we did through independent calls to your Institution revealed no academic provision which would allow you to do GIPEDI AND meet your own academic attendance requirements.
/ your TPO signed the Application but THEN you said you had exams and had to join late
/ your TPO did not enclose a Consolidated merit List (CML) even though he/she forwarded more than two applications to GIPEDI
/ your TPO did not apply the seal of the TPO / seal of the organisation after signing.
You applied in a Category to which you were not eligible / you applied in category A without the properly attested financial documents to establish financial need
/ you applied for the wrong Batch or you applied for a Batch to which we are not yet accepting applications (we do not keep such applications on file)
/ you applied for a wrong Category - for example, you asked for financial waivers but no documentation was attached to prove you were eligible for such waivers.
Your application had missing pages / missing information / was printed incorrectly (every page has to be printed and submitted, even if you have not filled anything in a particular form/page)
Your performance in the basic courses was not upto to the mark.
(a) there were huge deal-breakers - perhaps you scored less-than-average grades in a whole lot of basic courses like basic maths/science courses or your performance was only good in labs and not in theory courses
(b) / your CGPA was not upto the mark / was so low that we would recommend that you would be better advised to spend the proposed time studying to make up rather than coming for a Internship. It is not as if we insist you have outstanding CGPA's, but any CGPA less than 7+ makes us look for other outstanding things about you, like a outstanding Letter of Recommendation.
Plagiarized application material (part or full) was noticed and marked - we use plagiarism detection software to detect matches
Letters of Recommendation which have the following problems
(a) were not in the GIPEDI prescribed format
(b) were not from a faculty member at the level of Assistant Professor or above
/ did not have the faculty members OFFICIAL postal and email address (free email addresses like gmail.com, yahoo.co.in etc are not allowed)
/ did not seem to have been filled in by the Faculty Member
/ were not signed by the Faculty Member
(c) were not verifiable when a background check was performed (we may call/email and verify the recommendation from independent sources in your Institute)
(d) were copied from other LoRs
(d) were substantially identical to LoRs / LoR templates available in the Internet
(e) did not maintain confidentiality (were not in sealed and signed envelopes)
(f) did not highlight any particular strong feature / highlighted a feature which is negative
No interest was indicated in the application by any Faculty Mentor from IIT Delhi (to whom the application was circulated) in the area you indicated in your SoP - this could be Faculty Members who saw your application were not interested, were not available (were on sabbatical), were not ready to take you due to the existing set of students working with them.
Unavailable resources in the area of interest mentioned in application
(a) no equipment available/ specialized equipment necessary for the area in your SoP is not available / is already booked / is too expensive
(b) too many students are already working
(c) you said that you definitely need financial support if you came (or that you would only come if financial support / waiver was available) and no financial support was available at the moment
(d) No mentor was available or no mentor agreed to accept you
You applied late / or for the wrong batch.

KVPY students, KVPY Summer Camp students (in summer batch), IASc Summer Research Fellowship Students and IITD Summer Research Fellowship students do NOT pay the Application Fees or the Internship Fees.
NTSE Scholarship Holders do not need to pay any Application Fees. They are eligible for a partial-waiver based on their marks obtained (school upto professional degree) and pay reduced operation fees.
IITDelhi Summer Research Fellows (merit list 1-20) do not pay the Application Fees.
IITDelhi Summer Research Fellows (merit list 21 and onwards) do not pay application fees but they must pay the operational fees if they apply under the GIPEDI Internship - they may apply for a partial waiver of operation fees which will be considered on a case to case basis at the end of the internship.
Indian Academy of Sciences Fellowship Students do NOT pay the Application Fees or the Internship Fees (however, this 100% exemption is through full reimbursement on successful completion*). They need to fill in the GIPEDI Application Form Parts A (with the NOC from TPO) and Part B (in hardcopy and online) however, and they need to fill in the Secondment Form. Submitting a LoR is optional. The Dean of Students makes arrangements with INSA for the Hostel stay of all IASc students - please fill in the Hostel Application Form in the hardcopy of the Application Form. Filling in the GIPEDI application only makes it convenient for us to capture all the information of the incoming IASc students in a centralized manner. You will still remain IASc Fellowship students who have done the internship under IIT Delhi's GIPEDI Internship Program. All IASc SRFP Fellows will pay the full Operational Charges (Rs.7000) ONE month before the GIPEDI Batch they are joining starts. They will be refunded the entire amount two working days before the Batch ends. If they do not join or fail to complete the GIPEDI Program, this amount will be forfeited and will not be refunded to them.
All students who are finally selected have to have the Life/Accident Cover however and they have to pay the per day hostel boarding and lodging charges of Rs.230/- (for parents and if you stay as a guest, the rate is more) (these are current rates - they may be revised).
If you plan to stay in IIT Delhi and/or work in any of the IIT Delhi labs, you will need to be insured with
life insurance + accident insurance cover (please take a Insurance Policy worth Rs.100000/- for both life and accident cover) and
medical insurance cover (minimum of Rs.50000 cashless Mediclaim on Third-Party Administrator basis in a Delhi hospital).
A self-attested photocopy of all these Insurance Policies (or a letter from your Parent Institute stating the details such as Policy Number of these policies if you happen to be insured under a Group Insurance Scheme) is to be filed with the FITT Office and the Coordinator before you are allowed to start.

What is the minimum period of stay I must plan on spending here ?
(Related question: Can I stay in my parent Institute in (for example, Ambala) and yet be registered in the GIPEDI Internship Program (visiting IIT Delhi occasionally) ?
Quick answer : If you stay outside 40 kms from IIT Delhi, NO !
You have to attend the lectures and events and you can't do that if you stay elsewhere.
Students who are from local Institutes of Delhi - within 40 kms of IIT Delhi may stay elsewhere but they still have to
attend all events / lectures / feedback sessions. If the faculty mentor gives a unsatisfactory feedback in two feedback sessions,
the Certificate of Completion may be withheld and the Internship terminated.
The only exception to this rule is when the Faculty Mentor places you in a collaborating organisation which is outside IIT Delhi.
)
To qualify for a Certificate of Completion
during the summer/winter internship periods, you must spend at least 60/30 days in IITD or a partner institution during this term. Attending orientation lectures at the beginning is compulsory.
during either of the semester internship periods (Jan-May or July-Dec), you must spend at least 120 continuous days in IITD or a partner institution during this term.
I can't start the program on time, can I still do it ? OR I need to appear for exams during the internship, can this be allowed ?
Yes, you can take leave of absence (of say 'X' days) for giving your exams but you may have to stay that many more days (equal to 'X') at the end. This needs prior permission of the Coordinator. Typically, X < 3 continuous days. You cannot join and then take leave for, say, 7 days (that violates the sense in which this special leave is granted).
Will I get a Hostel accommodation ?
Normally, no - see this letter from the Associate Dean, Students, IIT Delhi.
No intern (except KVPY interns, IITD Summer Interns (merit list 1-20) and IASc Fellowship Students) will be guaranteed Hostel Accomodation. Hostel accomodation (with boarding and lodging) presently costs Rs.280/- (if you stay as someone's guest, the guest rate is more than @Rs.350/- per day) and is payable in advance. This per day cost may be revised by IIT Delhi from time to time.
You are welcome to apply separately to the Dean (Students) for hostel accommodation and/or boarding - we will recommend and forward such applications on a case-to-case for favourable consideration. It is usually possible to request and obtain hostel accomodation in IIT Delhi only during the summer internship period but this cannot be guaranteed. A sample application form for hostel accomodation is attached in your application form.
If the Hostel facility is availed, you immediately have the following advantages - you encounter other IITD students and their culture first-hand and build relationships, you save on commuting time and cost, you can concentrate on working on the project in the night, plus you can avail of the library e-facilities in the evening.
Alternatively, you may make arrangements for your stay in nearby areas of IIT Delhi e.g Katwaria Sarai, Ber Sarai, Kalu Sarai and Lado Sarai. Your student mentor might be able to help you with these arrangements. There are some private hostels for men and women within walking distance of IIT Delhi.
You may try these outside IIT Delhi (courtesy Delhi Tourism) : for accomodation outside IIT Delhi premises see - http://www.delhitourism.nic.in/delhitourism/accomodations/
I have been given a Hostel Accommodation - what do I do now ?
Please note the following:
Please check which Hostel has been allotted to you in the List of Interns for your batch (usually this is given in the last column)
Usually, in the summer, only one Mens' Hostel (with Mess) and one Womens' Hostel (with Mess) are kept operating.
When you arrive, you have to bring with you the hostel charges payable in advance through a Crossed Demand Draft payable in New Delhi.
To arrive at how much this will be, multiply the cost per day x total number of days of your planned stay.
If you stay for a shorter period, a refund will not be possible / will be difficult to arrange so please don't overpay.
On the other hand, if you stay for a slightly longer period, a draft for the extra amount can always be made locally.
The Crossed Demand Draft must be payable to "DEANS DISCRETIONARY FUND <HOSTEL NAME>".
For example, if you have been allotted Vindhyachal Hostel, then the Crossed DD should be payable to "DEANS DISCRETIONARY FUND Vindhyachal Hostel"
For example, if you have been allotted Kailash Hostel, then the Crossed DD should be payable to "DEANS DISCRETIONARY FUND Kailash Hostel"
Bedding (mattress, pillow, bedsheets) have to be arranged by the students themselves. Usually, these can be rented locally with the help of the Caretaker of the Hostel. If you are picky about not using sheets etc used by other people, please bring your own sheets / pillowcovers and rent mattresses etc locally.
All students must report to the Wardens and to the Caretakers of their Hostels on arrival.
Contact details of Hostels are:
See a more detailed on IIT Delhi hostels / food / rules etc at http://bhm-iitd.org/2010/faq/ !
What will I get to do during the Internship ?
First of all, you will learn to meet and work with teams of people - students, faculty, technical staff. Second, you will interact with some leading researchers in the area if the occasion warrants. Third, you will execute a project under the direct supervision of your faculty and student mentors. In the mornings on most days, you will have a class / lecture / talk which is common to all students - you must attend this. Usually, this will finish by about 1130 hours, leaving you free to go back to the lab and interact with your Student Mentor (mostly) and Faculty Mentor (less frequently).
Will I get paid ?
Yes, if your faculty mentor can support you from his/her research grants. That depends on him/her entirely and the quality of your work.
Do I need to carry books / mattresses / blankets / pillows / buckets etc with me to IIT Delhi ?
Read the relevant books in your chosen area of work before you arrive. Bringing along one or two familiar books will not hurt but you don't have to bring a full crate of text books with you. Most books will be available here. Library access in IIT Delhi is online - bringing your own laptop will be useful.
In general, bring the following:
(a) your laptop (if you have one) - make sure you insure it against pilferage on the train.
Stick a ID label on it
And install anti-theft software like Prey www.preyproject.com (at your own risk) on your Android mobile and laptop.
(b) For the Hostel:

(ii) lock and keys (bring duplicates you can leave with friends)
(iii) Mosquito repellant (at least 1 tube) - plus plan on buying a mosquito net once you arrive, dengue fever is endemic in Delhi.
(iv) a money belt where you can keep cash safely (see What is a Money Belt ? )
(v) a printout of the Deans approval at the bottom of this page
(vi) bucket + mug + electric bulb can be bought locally
(c) Summer protection
(i) Cotton Cap (Delhi will be very hot around 42-45 deg C till the monsoons)
(ii) Bottle of drinking water (with a box of water purification pills - available at Chemists) - dysentery and food poisoning are common complaints
(dont eat anything raw/or anything which has not been cooked in the last 5 minutes)
(iii) A folding umbrella
(iv) hand sanitizer - 1 bottle
Winter protection (Delhi is very cold in winters and in the first week of Jan, can go to 1 deg)
(i) Heavy Jacket + light good quality sweater
(ii) Woolen socks
(iii) Muffler or 'monkey' cap or balaclava
(d) Walking shoes - we sometimes go on walks on weekends (see the item k below about permission from parents/local guardians)
(e) at least two non-technical books - see the list of Books-you-must-read on line and choose any three to bring with you. Please choose books that were published at least 20 years apart (for exmple, don't buy two books which were published last year).
Read one of them before coming.
(f) Your Health and Accident Insurance Policy - plus we must have a local contact address (a local guardian) who can be contacted by telephone in case of any emergency
(g) Common medicines you take normally - for fever, colds, diarhoea, cough, allergy, asthma, travel sickness
(h) If you intend to participate on field trips / heritage walks etc , get your parent's permission in writing or as a email to Uttam Aswal/Coordinator to do so.
(i) Bring YOUR ID card - it is necessary for getting student rates at various places (and during travel)
(j) A A4 size spiral bound grid notebook + pen (see What is a Grid notebook ? and What you should look for in one ? ) - if you don't find one, you can buy it locally before you meet your student mentor.
(l) 10 inlands (Rs.2.50 each) OR 50 postcards (50 paisa each) - these are available from post office counters
(k) Permission from your parents in writing stating that they have no objection to your participation in activities like weekend trips to places in and around Delhi
(m) Do not forget:
Cash / ATM Card etc
Hostel DD for payment for your boarding and lodging
ID Card of your parent institute
What should I expect - will we be working in a lab or a room or what ?
You will have your own computer and will share lab space and tools for doing your project as a team. You should bring your own laptop if you have one.
Please note that you will be expected to switch off your mobile phone during working hours - so please inform your parents and contacts that emergency calls only on the laboratory landline phone (011-26596226) will be your only mode of contact during working hours.
For Interns: During Internship
What is the typical working schedule during the Internship ?
0845 – 1730 hours every day (Mon to Fri). You need to mark attendance with your student mentor.
A weekly feedback is expected of you on every Friday morning by 0900 hours -this can be submitted online, by email or in the worst case by email.
Saturdays and Sundays are holidays but you need to keep your faculty mentor informed if you are going outside IIT Delhi.
Is formal wear necessary ?
We do NOT encourage overly casual wear like skimpy clothing and beach slippers/rubber slippers. Semi-formal wear (shirt-tie-trouser or salwar-kameez/formal top-trouser) may be needed for public occasions and events. Suits are NOT needed.
Daily lab wear is decent everyday clothing with shoes.
Can we 'chat' using gmail or yahoo messenger?
Yes, but we use chat for technical interaction, not for trivial chat. 'Chatting' is used for increasing productivity - students often use it to instantly communicate with faculty on an impromptu basis for quick focussed interactions.
Also, we use Skype for chat. You can download skype from Web according to the OS you are using on your PC. We prefer to use Ubuntu (the most current LTS version) as our OS in IIT lab PCs. For eg. if you are using windows then download the Windows version otherwise download Ubuntu version of the Skype software.
Also, all network usage is monitored in IITD - so inappropriate usage will mean termination of your internship.
Please note that usage of mobile phone and internet may not be allowed during some parts of the day - please be prepared to deal with this !
What kind of project/assignment would I be looking to work on?
There are, at IIT, a huge number of on-going projects. But depending upon the requirement in them and according to your skills set, you would be given the sub tasks.
What kind of lab facilities will be available to me inside IIT Delhi?
We have most of the state-of-the-art required software and several hardware development platforms. You may visit with prior appointment if you have special requirements for equipment, software and hardware.
Will I have a faculty mentor as well?
Yes, all the interns will be working under faculty's guidance and they will assign a student mentor to you.
Can the internship be extended beyond the last date ?
No, but a roll-over registration (allowing you to stay for the next internship batch) is possible. This will be performance-based and subject to the consent of the faculty mentor. Also, you have to stay (and pay, depending on application's category) for the minimum period of the internship you are rolling-over into.
For instance, if you complete the summer internship (June 1 - June 30) and then apply for a roll-over into the July 15-Dec 15 internship, you wil have to stay (and pay, depending on your application's category) for 4 more months (minimum stay for the next internship period).
Can we use IIT Delhi library facility?
Yes, You can use it online. Library access is online here . So you don't need to go to library actually but if you need some specific book/paper/report/journal etc then your student mentor, who is an IIT student, can get that issued for you from library.
Is the internet available in IIT labs, and will the intern be allowed to use it?
Internet access is available for interns on need basis during working hours.
Do we do anything else during this Internship ?
Yes, we often go for sensitization tours of Delhi such as heritage walks. In Delhi, such walks are organised by:
(a) INTACH http://www.intachdelhichapter.org/heritage_walks.html - approx Rs.50 per head
(b) Delhi Heritage Walks http://www.delhiheritagewalks.com/walks.html - approx Rs.200 per head

We also take short trips to other places, sometimes little known, in Delhi.
For Completing Interns: After Internship
Can I come back to the Bharti School of Telecom after this internship is finished ?
Yes, the association is for life. We don't have farewell functions. You would have to apply in time, however, since seats are limited.
What next ?
Try telling people about the GIPEDI ( bit.ly/gipedi )
When you go back, organise a class meeting with the T&P Office and the junior batch of students (2nd / 3rd year) in relevant disciplines (Electrical / Electronics / Communication / Telecommunication / Computer Science & Engg / Instrumentation / Info & Comm Tech ) and tell them about your experience with the GIPEDI Program.
Email out the GIPEDI URL bit.ly/gipedi to your juniors and batchmates. Try comparing your experience in the GIPEDI with that of your classmates.
Print out the poster of GIPEDI in color (or ask for it to be posted to you) and put it on your T&P Notice Board with permission.
Apply to IIT Delhi for a MS(Research) or a MTech or a PhD after you graduate.
Plan to appear for the GATE exam with the right amount of preparation so that we can take you as a MS(R) or a MTech student.
See our GATE cutoffs at http://ee.iitd.ernet.in/Short_listing_MTECH_PHD.pdf or http://www.cse.iitd.ernet.in/academics/gradadmissions/MCS-shortlisting-criterion.pdf .
You can also apply for a Project Staff position after you graduate, and apply as a part-time MSR candidate after a year. No GATE cut-off score is applied to part-time candidates but you have to make it though the other short-listing criteria like marks obtained in BTech/BE. Plus clearing GATE and having a valid GATE score helps, because many projects can support you as a Junior Research Fellow (JRF or Senior RF) if you have one.
Try applying what you learnt here
Karmanye Vadhikaraste, Ma phaleshou kada chana – You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of actions.Do what is right, as a duty, without expecting reward in return or being attached to the fruits of your actions.
Try, as Kipling put it, to "fill the unforgiving minute with 60 seconds worth of distance run".
Try following Polonius's advice to his son Laertes in Hamlet Act 1, scene 3, 78–82: This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. Farewell, my blessing season this in thee!
Try to be yourself - there is no one like you in this world.
