In the Spring of 2021 Amanda Dempsey, wife of Oakland City University President Ron Dempsey, envisioned a community garden and received a grant from Duke Energy. She reached out to community members for help. Gibson County Master Gardener members became involved. David Kelle, Sandra Riley, Lili Swenson, and Stu Swenson have all worked at the garden which is located on College Avenue on the OCU campus.
The community garden was created with raised gardens because it was built on an old gravel parking lot. Next to the community garden is a traditional garden planted in soil. During the summer when few students were on campus, community members helped with the garden. In the fall students earned community service credit by helping in the garden.
