Project Alpha successfully inspires good choices

Greenville, South Carolina - On Saturday June 22, 2013 the brothers of the Greenville, SC Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha in partnership with the March of Dimes conducted their annual Project Alpha Seminar. The event was held in Greenville, SC at the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. Fifty-three male youths ranging from the age of 10 to 18 years old participated in this event.

The chapter collaborated with local community organizations in order to make this an impactful day for participants. Featured speakers were Dr. Kenneth Rogers of Greenville Health Systems, Mr. Stacey Ashmore – Community Outreach Coordinator of Greenville Family Partnership, and Bro.Farroll Daniels – CEO of Save Our Sons. These speakers addressed topics related to self-respect, respect for others, bullying, teen pregnancy, gang violence and cyber-social responsibility.

In addition to the featured speakers, the chapter also coordinated with the local movement promoting 107 days of non-violence. This movement started in Birmingham, AL and has become a national movement that is currently underway in Greenville, SC. Participants – youth and adults – had the opportunity to sign a pledged committing themselves to 107 days of non-violence. The group received an overview of the movement from the local coordinator Pastor Curtis Johnson. The seminar was also supported by the local radio station 107.3 WJMZ.

The synergistic approach and vision of this year’s chairperson brother Chuck Ford was flawlessly executed. A solid and foundational message was conveyed to all of the youth participants, sponsors and parents who attended.
