Greenville, South Carolina - On January 22, 2013, State Representative Chandra Dillard and Ms. Mary Duckett on behalf of Southernside Neighborhood in Action (SNIA) submitted a complaint under Title VI of the Civil Rights Action of 1964 to the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Office of Civil Rights alleging that the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) discriminated against the residents of Southernside by denying residents the opportunity to provide input on SCDOT’s decision to demolish the Hampton Avenue Bridge, which served as a critical connector between the neighborhood and rest of Greenville.
Recently we’ve learned the Federal Highway investigator will be in Greenville on Monday, September 9 to see first-hand the devastation the demolition of the bridge has had on our community. Many residents with no transportation must now walk 1.5 miles to their destination.
To support the Southernside neighborhood in their effort to seek justice, Gamma Gamma Lambda participated in a Hampton Avenue Bridge Unity Rally and Walk Sunday, September 8, 2013, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Victory Temple Baptist Church, 1100 Hampton Avenue, Greenville 29601. Gamma Gamma Lambda brothers Polsey and Chatman participate in a the walk/rally. They walked the 1.5 symbolic route with other groups to effort the residents. Gamma Gamma Lambda was proud to participate in this historic moment for the community. We were glad to support an effort to make sure history is on the side of Southernside residents.
