Mayanna Pearson was selected as this year’s winner.
Greenville, South Carolina - Manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind have always been the efforts of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and of the Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter (GGL) here in Greenville. The Luke H. Chatman Memorial Scholarship which was named in honor of one of GGL’s most prestigious members is given each year to High School Students in Greenville County who excel in scholastic, extracurricular, and community activities.
Mayanna Pearson, GGL’s 2012 scholarship recipient, embodies these characteristics and much more. Upon graduation from Southside High School earlier this year Mayanna ranked 60 out of 160 students in her senior class and finished with a cumulative GPA of 3.417. She was selected after our previous selection, Isaiah Ramel Hicks, revealed his plans not to enroll in college first year.
Ms. Pearson currently attends Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC where she is pursuing at degree in Education. After attaining her degree Mayanna plans to peruse her dream of opening a Charter school in order to better educate and mold Americas youth. Mayanna is a soft-spoken young lady but is also very ambition and possess a positive attitude and optimistic outlook on life. We are looking forward to her future knowing that it is a bright and promising one.
