Greenville, South Carolina - Gamma Gamma Lambda released the 2012 Luke H. Chatman Scholarship Application packet to Greenville County High Schools on November 17, 2011. The Chapter has raised more than $60,000 for the scholarship and has supported more 40 students to attend College since the 1980s.
This year, there are few changes with the Scholarship application. the chapter agreed to allow MLK Citizenship Awards to sponsor student for the scholarship. The new form give an Choice for MLK Citizenship AWard to indicate they are recommending a student.
Deadline for application is April 1, 2012 and the student must be enrolled in 4-year College by January 15 2013. See the complete application packet attached below for complete rules and guidelines. Bro. Terry Williams <twilliams1929@gmail.com> is Scholarship Chair for this year and Chair the Scholarship Committee, which will review the applications in April.
Bio of Bro. Luke H. Chatman
A Greenville native, Brother Luke Haze Chatman was born August 18, 1921. Having been reared in the public schools of Greenville County, Brother Chatman advanced his education by matriculating at South Carolina State University where he received his B.S. in Business and a M.S. in Education. A principal member of the Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter, Brother Chatman served as President and Vice President as well as other chapter offices for many years.
In 1955, Brother Chatman became the first District Director form South Carolina. In 1968, he was elected Regional Vice President for the Southern Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. A staunch defender of public education, Brother Chatman worked tirelessly to improve the educational system in Greenville County for more than 30 years.
