5. Epilogue
George Leslie Smith (also known as Leslie) never returned to operational flying due to a back injury he sustained in the parachute landing, but he remained in the Royal Air Force for the rest of the war and for many years after, retiring as Wing Commander in 1966.
He was an active member of the RAF Escapee Committee, a recognised charity raising money 'helping those who helped us' and he would often give talks about his time in France and his escape.
George Leslie Smith (aussi connu comme Leslie) n'est jamais retourné au vol opérationnel en raison de la blessure au dos qu'il a subi dans l'accident, mais il resta dans la Royal Air Force pour le reste de la guerre et pendant de nombreuses années après, prenant sa retraite en tant que Wing Commander en 1966.
Il fut un membre actif du RAF Escapee Committee, un organisme de bienfaisance qui recueillait des fonds pour “aider ceux qui nous vinrent en aide” et fit de nombreuses presentations sur le temps qu’il passa en France et sur son evasion.
George first returned to France after the war in July 1946 to visit the crash site, and the places he stayed during those difficult weeks.
George retourna en France pour la première fois après la guerre, en Juillet 1946, pour visiter le site de l'accident, et les endroits il était resté pendant ces semaines difficiles.

George sadly died in 1993, he remained in contact with Roland for the rest of his life and his story is told here in remembrance of a kind, gentle man. He is survived by 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
George est malheureusement décédé en 1993, Il resta en contact avec Roland pour le reste de sa vie et son histoire est racontée ici en mémoire de l'homme doux et gentil qu’il était. Il est survécu par deux enfants, quatre petits-enfants et 11 arrière-petits-enfants.

In 1994, The Operation Overlord Medal (French 50th Anniversary) was issued by the town of Caen on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the liberation, this one was presented to George's son pictured below, also an RAF Navigator.
En 1994, à l’occasion du 50ème anniversaire de la libération, la ville de Caen a remis la Médaille Opération Overlord au fils de George, également pilote RAF.
I am George's youngest paternal grandson. I never asked or spoke to my grandfather personally about his time in France during his escape, so I never really knew or was able to thank him for what he did for his country, and for fighting and risking his life for the freedom I have today.
But I wanted to tell his story, and my father and I have been to the places George stayed and met one of the brave French persons who helped save his life, and I am saying it now; Thank you George and thank you too Roland.
Je suis le plus jeune petit fils de George, du côté de mon père. Je n'ai jamais rien demandé personnellement ni même abordé avec mon grand-père le sujet de son séjour en France pendant son évasion, et par conséquent je n’ai jamais été en mesure de le remercier pour ce qu’il a fait pour notre patrie, pour avoir combattu et avoir risqué sa vie pour la liberté dont je jouis aujourd’hui.
Mais j’ai souhaité raconter son histoire et mon père et moi nous sommes rendus aux différents endroits où George resta et nous avons rencontré l’un de ces courageux Français qui aida à lui sauver la vie, et je le dis maintenant: Merci George, et merci à vous aussi Rolland.
