* Painter by profession
* Enlisted in Company G, 122nd NY Volunteer Infantry Regiment,
6 August 1862 at Elbridge, NY (mustered by Lt. Andrew
J. Smith) for a term of three years
* Deserted from Provost Guard Union Army 7 July 1863 during the regiment's march to Williamsport VA
* Arrested and returned to the regiment 17 May 1864. Was tried but never punished.
* Regimental commander sent him into action at the battle of Cold Harbor where he was killed 1 June 1864 while "bravely doing his duty". (Discharge papers 25 July 1864)
* Letters Benjamin wrote from Sandusky OH between 18 Jan 1864 and 29 April 1864 indicate he was serving as guard to a
group of Rebel prisoners held on an island off Sandusky
