He lived in a hotel in Dearborn while Evelyn, Pat and Mike, and Tim born, stayed in Owosso living with Evelyn's parents. (Pat started kindergarten in Erie and then finished in Owosso. He broke his right elbow sliding standing down a sliding board to impress the girls.
He remembered a sixth-grade birthday party: He'd never had one, so he organized one without telling his parents. He bought sodas, mother happened to have a cake made. Had four or five friends. He said his mother was gracious about it, but after two hours, kicked the kids out and then spanked Barney.
He started driving at seven years old. He drove his mother who had never learned to drive.
He met his future wife in 1938 in Lansing, MI. They lived in the same apartment building. Evelyn lived with two roommates and worked at GMAC as a secretary (she'd graduated from Cleary College, Ypsilanti, MI, with a secretary degree). Barney lived with two male friends on the next floor. They met at a party in the girls' room, but they didn't get together for a few more months.
