Module 02: Literacy Instruction

Introduction:

In Module Two, you will learn about the two main literacy programs that are being used across the country, Balanced Literacy and the Science of Reading.  Balanced literacy is a combination of whole language and phonics instruction.  The science of reading is the extensive and comprehensive research-based evidence of what matters and what works in literacy instruction.

Objectives:

• Summarize Balanced Literacy.

• Explore the components of a Balanced Literacy Program.

• Examine the Science of Reading. 

• Explain why many school districts across the country are switching from Balanced Literacy to the Science of Reading.

Title: Reading Wars Venn Diagram and Essay

1. Create a Venn Diagram to Compare and Contrast Balanced Literacy and the Science of Reading. 

2. Write an essay that includes the following:

   • Describe Balanced Literacy. 

   • Explain the pros and cons of Balanced Literacy. 

   • Describe the Science of Reading. 

   •  Explain the pros and cons of Balanced Literacy. 

   • Create a short position statement on if you would choose to implement Balanced Literacy or the Science of Reading in literacy instruction.  

Length: 1 Venn Diagram and 2-3 page essay.
