We are going on a study trip to Edinburgh. We want to make sure that the trip is filled with interesting, academic and cultural events, that are relevant for our field of study: social study, philosophy and English.
We want to do a lot of things during a short period of time but we also want to make sure that people don't run out of energy and loose interest, so we also have some entertaining and creative bits and breaks.
Up to the study trip we are supposed to get in contact with a class (around our age) in Edinburgh that we can arrange to become pen pals with, so we can practice our English and set our expectations for the study trip.
Day 1, Monday 6th
Overview of what the day’s program brings in social and academic ways:
On the first day we would like to bring focus to get to know the city in which we are going to spend the next days. We will before lunch focus on a democratic choice. Wherever, the three options still include various types of academic culture (chosen to start out a bit wider than our specific subjects). We will get a very Edinburgh-ish experience with the gunfire after lunch and end up with a creative proces. We will round the day of together at dinner. All in all the day will focus on getting a wide aspect of the city with cosy internal experiences as a class.
8.00-9.00 breakfast at our hostel – presentation of the day and other formalities/agreements
9.30 meet outside to get phone numbers, a map, tickets for transport etc. We will vote for which two of the three possibilities sounds more interesting and divide ourselves into two groups that do two of the three following options:
We will take the tram together to Princes Street (Edinburgh Old Town).
1) A group can go to Scottish National Gallery at The Mound (opens at 10.00)
2) A group can go to the National Museum of Scotland at Chamber Street (opens at 10.00).
3) A group can go to Edinburgh’s Camera Obscura at Churchill (opens at 10.00). Free choice which one of the two given activities.
Before meeting with the group students should have bought lunch for themselves.
12.35 meet in front of Edinburgh Castle (Castlehill)
We will see the gunfire at 1 o’clock together.
Map of the tram’s route
Group Activity:
Everybody is divided into 4 groups after eye color or shoe size or whatever.
Each group must draw one card from the “How To”-pile and one card from the “What To”-pile and then get 45 minutes to prepare an act to perform in front of the class.
How to examples: backwards, in Chinese, singing/humming, slow motion
What to examples: thriller, fairy tale, romance, Disney
The stories that should be performed must include key words from the castle. Inspiration from other stories is allowed.
Around 3.30 leave the castle and go back to the hostel either together or separate. It is possible to see the University of Edinburgh nearby on the way home, if wanted. We will rest at the hostel until we meet again to go out for dinner as a group.
7.00 meet outside – walk to Lothian Road to have dinner at Red Squirrel.
Optional:
The Edinburgh Pub Crawl at Royal Mile in front of the Fringe Shop (contact: +44 7823 762123).
Other option: games night at the hostel (arranged by a teacher?)
Possible accommodation:
Day 2, Tuesday 7th
The goal for today is go get to know Scotland better, not by sightseeing but by spending a day with the Scottish class that we have been writing with up to this study trip. Today we are going to bring focus to our field of study by focusing on both social studies and English, by talking to the Scottish class we will practice our English. And talking to them about our different school systems will be relevant for our social studies. At the end of the day we will focus more on the social side but also still on the academic but in a more entertaining way.
8.00-9.00 breakfast (optional)
9.45 you have to be ready to go after we have eaten so don't show up in pajamas! We will meet in front of the hostel and go together to the to the Scottish school.
10.00 Introduction at the Scottish school, we get to meet our pen friends.
11.00 Tour around the school.
11.30 - 12.15 lunch (can be bought at the school cafeteria)
12.15 we all meet again in the classroom of the Scottish class and talk about our different schooldays and school systems and discuss the differences and the pros and cons.
1.30 We leave them to the rest of their school day and go to Edinburgh Zoo to see the Pinguin Parade 2.15.
3.00-5.30 break, go get a cup of tea and a piece of cake and relax before tonight.
5.30 everyone meet at the Meadows Park, and set up things and prepare for the Scottish students arrival.
6.00 the Scottish class joins us at the Meadows Park, we eat pizza and drink some beers.
7.00 We start doing some different activities:
Activity 1) who knows most facts about each other’s countries? A Scottish team vs. the Danish team should battle about whom knows the most facts. Each contestant get 30 seconds to say as many facts as the person can, the team who has all in all said the most facts has won.
Activity 2) Here we will learn the Scottish some Danish and the other way around. Each team gets piece of paper with a sentence on it and then one participant from the team will have to read it out loud as Danish or Scottish as possible (it will of course be some hard Scottish phrases that has to be said with a thick accent). Then there will be both a Scottish and a Danish judge who will rate how good it was from 1-5. The team with most points wins.
Activity 3) here we will play a drinking game called Kogle. We split up in to teams. A bottle will be put in the middle of the two teams (both teams should be about 4 steps away for the bottle) and then the teams take turns at throwing a show at the bottle (with goal to knock it over). And then the team should drink as much of their beer as the can attain, while the other team runs in on the field and set up the beers again, and when everyone from the team is back at their spot, they shout stop, the other team has to stop drinking their beer and then the goal is for the team to have finished each of their beers before the other team does.
Activity 4) At last there is a rap battle where the team gets a beat and then they have to rap a real swag gansta rap about their own country and the judge will call a winner.
11.00 pm cleaning of the area we have used.
Optional: If the Scottish class wants to we can go to a pub and drink some more beers with them or those who want to can return to the hostel and be fresh for tomorrow.
Day 3, Wednesday 8th
What you will get from the tour:
You will get a lot of new intelligence about the famous two philosophers David Hume and Adam Smith, about how they lived and how they worked (philosophy). You will hear great stories from your guide about the new and the old Edinburgh, how the city has evolved, how things has changed and how the connection to England is (English history). And furthermore you will experience how it is being a local in the heart of Edinburgh (English speaking country's culture). Make sure that you have prepared proper footwear for the day.
10am - meet outside
We will start the day of with getting a nice tour guide by locals, where we will see the city from the eyes of the locals and experience landmarks and other tourist attractions like no one else.
The tour will be concentrated around the two great philosophers, David Hume and Adam Smith. On this tour you will be told by the locals how they lived and how they worked, and hear some great stories from their lives in their beautiful town.
The group will then head on over to the newer part of Edinburgh, where you will be told some more stories about the philosophers while you will enter the National Portrait Gallery. (Here we'll eat lunch and have a snack together).
When the trip to the gallery is complete, you will have the opportunity to buy lunch or have a snack at the gallery's cafe. You will then continue on your tour, to see where the two great philosofers lies buried, and visit Adam Smiths final home.
The guided tour lasts around 3 hours.
When the tour has been completed you will head over to a nice place to have a nice quick break (where you can find food, if you chose not to buy lunch).
2 pm - meet again, where the bus picks us up
When you all have finished eating, we will get on a bus/coach out to the countryside "Pentland Hills", where we will walk on foot through the beautiful and unique nature that Scotland has to offer. On your walk through the beauty of Scotland’s countryside, you will learn about the land, how the soil feels, how the trees look, and how everything you see makes Scotland's nature so unique.
Now, this will be a relatively long walk, so please do keep in mind that you will need proper footwear for the outdoor terrain. Since this will be a longer activity, snacks and drinks will be provided.
While you are walking, you will be paired up in groups, where your objective is to create an activity that we will all be able to enjoy later on in the evening.
To get your imagination flowing we have provided a few starters to get your mind working along with the idea: a drinking game, hide & seek, would you rather and so on.
We do of course suggest that if you do choose any of these activities mentioned above, then at least add something special to the game, or invent a few new rules, so we all get to try something new.
The bus will take us back at 5.30, so we'll be back in the city center around 6. Then we have time off to find dinner etc.
8.30 pm meet at the hostel. Here we'll make the activities that we prepared earlier on. There will be biscuits and tea.
Day 4, Thursday 9th
What you will get from the tour:
Today we will get some scaryness and fun from the Edinburgh Dungeon. Afterwards we will get to know the city much better than we already do, when we take use of the method from social studies: Urban Songline. By using Urban Songline we will get to see how a local Scottish person experiences the city and which places they love and which they hate. This will inspire us to maybe see some new parts of the city that we haven't visited before.
8.00-9.00 breakfast
10.00 meet outside
We will take the train to Edinburgh Waverley Station and walk to the Edinburgh Dungeon, which is a sort of fun fair, where you get a guided tour through the dungeons. The tour will last around 1-1,5 hour.
12.00 - 3.00 Free-time for lunch, sightseeing, shopping etc.
(Guide to the best cheesecake places in Edinburgh)
(Shopping: Princess street, Victoria Street, Princess mall)
(Lunch recommended at Falko Konditormeister, a famous bakery in Edinburgh)
3.00 Meet at the Edinburgh Ferris Wheel (next to the Scott Monument).
We will take use of the method (from city sociology) urban songline* in groups. This activity lasts for 3 hours (until 6.00)
*Urban Songline is a method we have used in social studies when you want to know more about how a city is for the people who uses it. It gives insight to where people feel home and where they don’t.
So you’ll have to spilt into groups of four and four and then you’ll each get a map over the city, some coloured pencils.
Then each group will go to each their part of the city, and find some people to interview. Before the interview they should ask the respondent about some background information.
The interviewer should get the respondent they interview to draw in his everyday route on the map they have brought. The the respondent should draw a little number at each place where he stops during the day (work, school, supermarket, café, kindergarten etc.). After the respondent has done that you should interview the respondent about his route and which places he feels most comfortable, at home, happy and so on, and where he feels most unsafe and uncomfortable and so on and so on. And then you should draw in – and + with the places he doesn’t like and the places he does like.
Afterwards you have a special map and you can go around and visit some of the places he talked about, and take some pictures if you want to.
You are free during the evening (where you eat, what you see etc.), but note that you are obligated to inform the teachers of your whereabouts and be aware of the fact that you must be relatively clear in you head the morning after.
If you decide to go elsewhere after informing your teacher, you will have to contact the teacher by phone or a text.
Day 5, Friday 10th
What you will get from the tour:
Today is focused on being social and physical. We will challenge ourselves and built up a stronger confidence and social/communication skills. In the evening it is all about having a last good time and enjoy a nice dinner together. The quiz will live up to the academic goals in English, where we will learn about a English-speaking country's history and use the English language.
8-9 breakfast (make sure to be ready to go straight after dinner)
9.00 meet outside where a bus picks us up. We will drive to Kirkhill just south of Edinburgh.
10.00 – 4.00 Adventure Race formed by the company Boots’n’Paddles. These tours can consist of white water sledging, gorge swimming, rappelling etc.
*School group activity programmes – designed to challenge the children by exposing them to activities that they may not have tried (or even heard of before) in a fun and entertaining way. These programmes are tailored to different age groups and abilities. Great for building confidence, social and communication skills.
4.30 meet the bus and drive back to the city.
We will have had snacks during the day, but probably be hungry after using a lot of energy, so we will take the bus straight to a restaurant (possibly Dubh Prais at High Street) and have early dinner together.
Make sure that you’ve packed more or less already, so you are ready to leave the next morning, quite early.
While finishing up dinner we will be introduced and explained the rules for “The Big Edinburgh Quiz”, a quiz that contains 10-12 (difficult) questions about the history of Edinburg. The questions must be hard enough so it will be necessary to use either Google (since we don’t have internet, we'll have to ask Scottish people) or ask people on the streets.
The teachers will have found a price for the winning team and prepared the questions during the day. (For example which year the city was founded etc.).
Ideas for the continuing evening (optional)
Film/Game night at the hostel
Or of course something else you’ve found during the week that you’d like to see (again).
Go to bed, enjoy the last couple of waken hours in the city and then have a good night's sleep before the travel home the morning after :)
