Members of your school community might find it useful to be able to search for books they find in Goodreads in your library catalog. You can even add your school catalog to the lists of "book links" available in the "Edit My Profile" section of Goodreads.
HOW TO SEARCH YOUR OWN CATALOG THROUGH GOODREADS
Goodreads needs to know how to search your library catalog. This is something you have to figure out (as I did for the Follett Destiny library system -- see below).
Example of Follett Destiny URL code for searching:
ISBN / ISBN13:
<<<YOUR CATALOG URL>>>/cataloging/servlet/handlenumbersearchform.do?searchOption=3&searchText=#ISBN#&includeLibrary=true&includeMedia=false&siteTypeID=-2&siteID=&mediaSiteID=&doNotSaveSearchHistory=false&site=103
TITLE:
<<<YOUR CATALOG URL>>>/cataloging/servlet/handlebasicsearchform.do?keywordText=#TITLE#&siteTypeID=-2&searchType=title&siteID=&includeLibrary=true&includeMedia=false&mediaSiteID=&doNotSaveSearchHistory=false&awardGroupID=-1&site=103
where <<<YOUR CATALOG URL>>> is where you access your Follett Destiny catalog online, e.g., for UWCSEA it is http://catalog.uwcsea.edu.sg .
where &site=xxx identifies which site in a district your catalog is.
If you only have one catalog, the site number will be "&site=100".
For example, we have four sites, so we need to know which site has which number, e.g., &site=100 = Dover Secondary, &site=101 = Dover Primary, &site=102 = East Primary, &site=103 = East Secondary. If this string isn't added to the end of every URL, Follett Destiny doesn't know which catalog to go to.
You can check the numbers associated with each of your sites (if you have a Destiny district set up), by hovering over the links on the District catalog list page, e.g., see below where the cursor is on the East-Secondary Library link -- revealing it is site number 103.
Softlink's Oliver is another popular school library catalog. We are working on figuring out the right URL for that. Contact me later if you are interested.
GoodReads lets some people have "Librarian" privileges, which means the power to edit book records, book covers, series information, author information, etc. Anyone with at least 50 books on their shelves can apply.
