Introduction
This site contains maps of Great Britain based on the Ordnance Survey Open Data. Link to OS Open Data
The data were taken from the OS 1:50000 gazetteer.
Note that unless otherwise stated on an individual map, the information in the maps was collected from the entire OS 1:50000 gazetteer, with no selection by type of map feature, such as town, water feature or farm.
Page names in the side bar are allocated according to the following conventions.
Pages with names beginning with "a" contain information about place locations and names.
Pages with names beginning with "b" contain information about places selected by name beginnings.
Pages with names beginning with "c" contain information about places selected by name contents in any position.
Pages with names beginning with "e" contain information about places selected by name endings.
Pages with names beginning with "w" contain information about places selected by the whole names.
Pages with names beginning with "z" are not about place names.
Colours of dots on maps
Where colours represent positions of letters in names, the convention is red = beginning, blue = end, green = anywhere.
Where dots of two different colours are shown for the same part of a name, the following usually applies.
Where beginnings have been selected, colour distinguishes between cases such as Kingston and Charlton Kings.
Where endings have been selected, colour distinguishes between cases such as Frampton and Frampton Mansell.
