the gax revolution marathons

you can if you think you can

Once upon a time in Denmark (like in 2011) ... there were few runners who loved marathons too much and wanted to run every week. So they created races to do just that. Other people followed and when the pandemic of 2020 hit the world and closed much of it this new craze hit Sweden as well. Also - 40 years (as of 2021) is a long time for a mid size town in Sweden not to have a marathon! I had this idea for years but now it coincides well with a wish too show the town of Lund in general and Norra Fäladen in particular as well as an excuse to hang out after work and drink lots of water and eat energy bars ...

This race marked the 62:nd event and 559:th start of a gax-event. Nothing happened 'out there'. It was just a peaceful run with good company, good weather and good quiet suburban contemplation along the next-generation synchrotron radiation facility MAX IV Laboratory. More than half of the proceeds are given to those in need - the people of Afghanistan. Course records are: maxrutten - 4:45:21 (Susanne Gren 2021) & 3:45:15  (Fredrik Lähnn 2022), 4:39:07 (50 km, Johan Melin 2023) & 6:13:03 (50 km, Malou Björnslätt 2024), faladsrutten - 4:36:30 (Cecilia Olsson 2021) & 3:57:16 (Ross Nugent 2021) and garagerutten - 3:56:46 (Johan Melin 2021).

By popular request the 50 km is back. This was the 61:st gax-event/race held in 19 years which gives an average race distance of ≈ 90 km and it was the 24:th revolution-event. There has been 449 finishes in 555 starts. For this race it was decided to run backwards (and as always, the last lap in opposite direction just like Mr. Lake does). Because there is one looong hill (like +1 km) and it is better to have that as a downhill every lap instead of an uphill every lap. On the other hand, this fact was debatable among the runners ... Weather was wintery and fine enough, about 0-5°, due to the damp it got very cold during the wee hours. It is always exciting to watch the suburb gettin' ready for shut eye and see who gets up way to early for work (or adventure). One of the runners actually ran the 50:th race of 50 km this long night. As always, more than half of the proceeds are given to those in need - the people of Afghanistan. Course records are: maxrutten - 4:45:21 (Susanne Gren 2021) & 3:45:15  (Fredrik Lähnn 2022), 4:39:07 (50 km, Johan Melin 2023) and 6:13:03 (50 km, Malou Björnslätt 2024), faladsrutten - 4:36:30 (Cecilia Olsson 2021) & 3:57:16 (Ross Nugent 2021) & garagerutten - 3:56:46 (Johan Melin 2021).

24 hours prior to start we were two and one unsure runner, 22 hours  later we were three and at the starting line the total had increased by 100 %. six runners, awesome. Among us we had a collective experience of about 2500 marathons ... all between 6 and about 962 marathons (who's counting anyway ...). The weather was mild and damp, a little bit rain and all OK. No action whatsoever during the run. FUn times were had by all, at least afte the race. We found out that the race is quite tough due to all the hills despite its flatness. Some people also say it is 43,5 km ... Course records are: Maxrutten - 4:45:21 (Susanne Gren 2021) & 3:45:15  (Fredrik Lähnn 2022), faladsrutten - 4:36:30 (Cecilia Olsson 2021) & 3:57:16 (Ross Nugent 2021), garagerutten - 3:56:46 (Johan Melin 2021). Weakest marathon startfield ever (like last time). Weak in participants but not in spirit. And spirit we needed! The weather was awesome and tough and hard and white and deep and snowy and and wet and sleechy. The Apps promised rain and plus 1 degree all through the race ... And it sure delivered. The rain was heavy snow half of the time, and semi heavy snow the other half. Exciting times for sure. One celebrated his tenth marathon and one ran his 956:th or something ... Besides a cool and hard route, nothing else happened. Course records are: maxrutten - 4:45:21 (Susanne Gren 2021) & 3:45:15  (Fredrik Lähnn 2022), faladsrutten - 4:36:30 (Cecilia Olsson 2021) & 3:57:16 (Ross Nugent 2021), garagerutten - 3:56:46 (Johan Melin 2021). The weather was not really perfect this time ... It did snow for a while, beautiful but mild winter weather in these parts makes a slushy and slippery run. And with the dampness came the cold. Probably the worst weather ever on these marathons. But ... we do these things not because they are easy but because they are hard (John F. Kennedy. Absolutely nothing happened during the race. Very good mental training, bad weather and few runners. The weather was perfect winter chill. The small registered trio was doubled to six starters just shortly before start. The weather was perfect and the suburb quiet enough. No reported injuries and pretty much no real action at all, except for our running that is. The pixel giant screen at MAX IV showed a skull, which is always a quirky treat. Again! Good times and happy campers all around. And again perfect weather despite it being autumn. Perfect weather if you like just the right amount of rain, too much wind and balmy late summer Swedish "heat" wave. What a race! 33 % of the participants were women (quite high). 56 % were first timers (for this race). We were nine participants which is the most ever in a gax marathon (we were even ten registered). And one finisher was only 16 years old (Svea)! That is quite unique and just awesome. Another (Louise) upped her ante by running 40 % longer than ever before! And Pavel won on his sixth attempt, and made it into the (gax) hall of fame. The rest of us just had plain fun. Building material everywhere at the start and 80 % of the garden (aka Race HQ) covered in debris and plastic - no problem.  A drizzle during the day did not stop anyone either. It rained for the most part of the race, or as the race directors saw it: best weather ever (it was quite warm). Route - maxrutten. Nice wintery weather, about six degrees Celsius, followed the small gathering around the course in the evening. There was five veterans and a newcomer, a legendary Race Director from the outskirts of Lund. A very smal route change have been made due to construction work on a path. In the morning winter had again made its appearance with a beautiful white duvet of snow everywhere ... but it did not take long before it melted and covered the ground in water and sleech ... Most of it was gone when the race started. But in the end the beautiful snow came back, along with ice and slipperiness. One of the participants was a first timer ... so he ran like the wind. Two participants had run a marathon in the morning! They did not run like the wind ... Everybody happy in the end. Marathon running does that to you. The route was again maxrutten. It started out nice but after an hour or two the cold took its toll. It was a slow evening. Not a slow night on the town (village) though. There were four police cars at the end of the race on the bicycle path. Cops were running and the guns were out. Todays crowd had a very wide range of experience ranging from 2 marathons (and a few 250-km to top that) and 997 marathons (GrandMaster Skoog): together the runners had about 2650 marathons between them! A marathon in the middle of the night on a work day! Why not? Actually four people signed up (that's a lot methinks) but in the end only three started. It was easier, faster and more "fun" than we expected. The route consisted of 151 laps (and off course: last lap in opposite direction) in a mildly temperated garage with four turns only. It was fully illuminated and the traffic consisted of one car and on bicycle during the whole race as we ran when normal people sleep ... Nothing else, at all happened during the race. Great challenge. Good training for ultra. Route: garagerutten. More than half of the proceeds are given to people in need - the people of Afghanistan. We weren't bothered at all about the meagre turnout. Just made it more adventurous. Good solo ultra training and grinding. The temperature was 0° Celsius and it snowed lightly most of the time. Cold but not too much for the two happy campers at the end of the road. This route was perfectly suited for the weather. Desolate and no cars. Route: maxrutten. The participants were not new to the practice of running all night (however, they are new to begin a normal work day just an hour afterwards). Zingo just did a six day and Johanna recently finished three marathons in a day. The weather was so so. Dark and humid, cold and damp. And it rained for an hour or two. But, as it always ends up, all were proud and happy for running yet another race and fo r the bodies to still carry us. The most exciting thing that went down was a blinking street light ... oh the suburban adventures ... Route: faladsrutten. We also had a new route record as well as a new race record (Fredrik Lähnn) - 3:56:15. Not bad. It rained all day and evening ... but as this was a 100 % night time race. It didn't rain :-) Actually it was perfect weather. The runners thought it was a splendid idea to run a race before having the morning coffe and going to work (it won't count if you don't go to work ...). On runner ran a lot, one runner did not even start and the other ran most and walked a few laps. Route: faladsrutten. Weather wise it was a success. Hardly any wind and the sun shone until 20:00. Then it got dark. Then it got damp. Then it started to rain. Well, a one hour drizzle anyway. 100 % finish rate. Quiet in the suburb today. It seems that absolutely nobody got lost at all to day, not even the RD! And big congratulationss to Sören Remar who today ran his 200:th marathon! That is awesome. His next goal is to run 201 marathons ... Route: faladsrutten. More than half of the proceeds are given to people in need - the people of Afghanistan. The weather was ... hard. Cold andf crisp, very windy but barely OK. As such, the suburb was deserted and empty. Darkness set in on the last two laps for most. The course was measured to 303 height metres which amounts to 7 metres per kilometer. Two people DNS:ed due to colds. Today there were twonewcomers. Some of us ran their second marathon, some ran their 595:th ... Some had no problems, some got sick but it seems that all were happy, afterwards anyways ... Marathon does that to you. The Englishman won. Again. Three participants had to stay at home due to minor isssues so they missed out on the pre-spring beautiful weather. The suburb was lively with heaps of people walking and playing beach volley ... until Swedish night and cooler weather set in. Four persons found their way perfectly around the marked course, the other ran 46,5 km :-) Route: faladsrutten. Route: faladsrutten. We have a new course record ... 3:57:16. The english soldier soldiered on to come in first easily. The weather was typical fresch Scanian spring weather - damp, cold, gusty, windy and chilly ... We had the honour of the participation of Mr. Lennart Skoog who today finished his 969:th marathon (many of them longer). Some of the other participants only had like 600 and 700 marathons to their name ... Darkness set in at about 21:00. Route: faladsrutten.
