To read these e-Books, go to the Dept of SACR’s Intranet page at: http://intranet.sac.fs.gov.za

(there is a list of links on the left-hand side of the web page - you must click on the one for "Electronic Books").

Once the EBSCOhost e-Books page has loaded, you can do searches using the search box, or otherwise browse our collection by clicking on the "eBooks"-link (at the top of the web page). In this "eBook Collection-section, you will find a list of subject-related links, under the heading "Browse by Category". In other words, books on the same subject are grouped together, just as they are in the library.

(take note that EBSCOhost's categories are not as detailed as the ones you will find in the library's categorised list - see above. It might save you some time if you use our library list in conjunction with EBSCOhost's searching and browsing tools).

Viewing/Browsing Tips:

When you ‘view’ an e-Book, you can quickly locate the specific section you want, by using the Table of Contents box on the left-hand side of the screen (where there is a “+” symbol, you can click on the “+” to expand that section). It also shows the book’s index - if it has one. You can use page numbers found in the index to go to a specific page: type in the number and click on “GO”.

How to SAVE or PRINT text of EBSCOhost eBooks

You can save or print sections (pages) from the e-Books (within limits) as follows:

    • Go to the “Tools” section on the right-hand side of the screen

    • Click on the “Print”-icon. Indicate which pages you want, and then

    • Click on “PRINT PDF”

    • Your computer will then probably ask if you want to open or save the “ebscohost.pdf”. This pdf is the document (pages from the ebook) which you specified. Your choice will depend on whether you merely want to print, or want to save the pdf-document on your computer.

    • If you only want to Print: select “Open”, and then wait for the message which says that the “download” has completed (because the document is actually downloaded on your computer, in one of your “Temporary Internet files” subfolders). You must now click on “open” to open the document, and then you can select the “Print” option.

    • If you want to Save the document (as a “controlled” download): you can simply select “Save” to start the download. But you have a more specific option, which you get by clicking on the “Save”-button’s arrow for a “drop-down list”. There you can select “Save as”, which enables you to specify the preferred place (folder or subfolder or memory stick) in your computer where you want it to be saved in.

    • Save and Print: Of course, you can do both – after you have saved the document, you can open it and print it. This is probably a better option when you want to print, because then you have the document in your files for possible future use.

    • Renaming the downloads: Note that the downloaded document (the pages from the e-Book which you download) is automatically named “ebscohost.pdf.” You must therefore rename the downloaded document with a suitable name, related to the topic of the e-Book.

A handy feature is that EBSCOhost automatically adds the Author and Title of the e-Book to every page that you save.
