Horse trough

Richard Durant 1791-1878 made his fortune in the silk trade and was Deputy Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Devon. In 1877 he presented this trough to the City of Exeter and it stood at the junction of Holloway Street and Magdalen Street. It was moved to the cemetery when Western Way was built. In 2012 FoHC decided to make a feature of the somewhat neglected object and subsequently used it as a container for plants. The original inscription was professionally restored because it was becoming illegible.
