The 270th anniversary of the 1746 siege of Fort Massachusetts.

The North Adams Historical Society will be commemorating the 270th anniversary of the siege of Fort Massachusetts. The commemorative ceremony will be held Saturday, August 20th, 2016, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, at the St. Francis Indian Ledge (799 Massachusetts Avenue) in North Adams, MA. Free parking is available at Renee’s Diner.

This year’s ceremony will include historical characters attired in period costume, the unveiling of a life-size wooden carving of a St. Francis Indian warrior, and a guest speaker.

The first 200 children will receive a free Fort Massachusetts coloring book!

After the commemorative activities, Friends of Fort Massachusetts will place a wreath at the site of Fort Massachusetts in remembrance of those thirty persons within the fort during this memorable siege. We hope you will join us in remembrance.

The soldiers were: Sergeant John Hawks, Chaplain John Norton, John Aldrich, Jonathan Bridgeman, Nathaniel Eames, Phineas Forbush, Samuel Goodman, Nathaniel Hitchcock, Thomas Knowlton, Samuel Lovatt, John Perry, Amos Pratt, Josiah Reed, Joseph Scott, Moses Scott, Stephen Scott, Jacob Shepherd, Benjamin Simonds, John Smead Sr., John Smead, Jr., Daniel Smead, and David Warren.

Last, but not least, an additional one, Captivity, daughter of John Smead, Sr., who was born along the way on their long journey to Canada.
