News: I won a 1.2m € FIS grant on "generic reasoning". I am hiring 5 postdoctoral researchers (for 3 years) in logic, AI, philosophy of language, cognitive science, and philosophy of law. Do get in touch if you are interested for further opportunities.
I am the national PhD program in AI as regular faculty. Reach out if you are interested in working with me.
Research Interests
My current research is on AI safety and risk (esp. regulation and governance), AI alignment, reasons and their combination, preference change and its logic, truthmaker semantics and justification logic.
My research and teaching interests are in logic (esp. deontic and modal, justification logic, truthmaker semantics), metaphysics (hyperintensionality, supervenience), metaethics (reasons, normative uncertainty), philosophy of language (evaluative adjectives, generics) and philosophy of law (responsibility, legal and normative aspects of artificial intelligence).
Bio
I am a(n Associate) Professor of Philosophy, Ethics, Law and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Pavia, in Italy, where I started in 2022. I am also an affiliate faculty at the Center for Human Compatible AI, UC Berkeley, invited by Stuart Russell, and director of the Center for Reasoning, Normativity and AI (CERNAI), and the Normative Risk Lab.
I am the Principal Investigator of a FIS2 grant funded by the Italian Ministry of Research (MUR) at the University of Pavia, Italy.
I was – until 2024 – the Principal Investigator of an Ambizione Grant funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNFS) at the University of Bern, where I was a Senior Researcher.
Starting in 2017/18, I was a (Senior) Researcher of the Flanders Research Foundation (FWO), which funded two 3-year research projects of mine. I was based at the Centre of Logic and Philosophy of Science of Ghent University (Belgium). I spent most of 2018/19 at the NYU Department of Philosophy, working with Kit Fine.
I was also awarded a Lise Meitner 2-year grant, which I spent at the University of Salzburg in 2019/20. I am part of the Nature and Normativity program of the JQY Academy of the Goethe University, Frankfurt, where I was elected the International Academy Program Fellow, in 2018/19.
I got my PhD in logic and philosophy in 2017. I studied at various stages and in various capacity at the University of Florence and at the University of Pisa; at NYU; in Paris (IJN, ENS and EPHE); at the Arché Research Centre at the University of St Andrews; Trinity College (Dublin), and the University of Pavia, as a fellow of Almo Collegio Borromeo.
