Martha (b. 17 March 1873 in Altstädter Straße in the parish of St. Jakobi and near Springeltwiete, and portrait above when back in Hamburg in 1890) was serving in her father JAL Hein's "coffee palace" in central Mount Gambier (which was also a bakery, with JAL Hein following his father's Hamburg profession), and first met William Manser when he walked in as a customer. When they married they first lived in a small house in OB Flat which was gradually extended as the family extended. There, they were virtually adjacent to August's property, resulting in both sets of children growing up together, going to the same school, and knowing each other very well.

As granddaughter Lyn Graney said in her talk at the 2010 reunion, Martha gave birth to and raised the 8 children over a period when there was no electricity or gas in the home, and she always had them immaculately dressed.

William was a builder, a farmer, a director of the Mount Gambier Co-operative store, a member of the Mt Gambier A&H Society, a member of the Agricultural Bureau and the chairman of the OB Flat School Committee.
