Clarence

Clarence `Clarry' Owen HEIN, b. 1912, Mt Gambier, m. 1938 Dulcie Mavis MOORE (b. 1919, Hamilton, Vic, d. 2006, Portland, Vic), Scott's Church, Portland, Vic, d. 2009, Portland, Vic, 3 children. In 2009 Clarence was one of only 2 surviving grandchildren of JAL Hein. He turned 97 in that year, but died later in 2009. Don Hein's eulogy can be found here, noting a remarkable life, including surviving captivity during service in World War 2. Don's eulogy also has a photo of Clarence in army uniform with wife and baby daughter.

Clarry was at the age of 16, in 1912 an apprentice jockey. In 1928 he and another made the 5-day round trip to Casterton to ride at the two-day Casterton Cup meeting, staying at the Railway Hotel. He got the ride on 33-1 chance King Sam in the Cup itself, trailed the field early, but on the home turn passed the field and went on to win. In 1932 won a double at Portland, including the Portland Cup on Sir Escombe. But due to weight problems he retired later that year.

In 1934 he returned to Portland to do some work and stayed there permanently, marrying in 1938.

Don Hein's eulogy, referenced in the first paragraph, tells more of his long life, including not just his captivity in World War 2, but also how 80 years after he won the Casterton Cup he presented the Cup to the winning jockey, a woman.
