Putting the Public First in Public Services!
The average residential electricity rate of 14.13¢/kWh in MI is 18.94% greater than the national average residential rate of 11.88¢/kWh.
The average commercial electricity rate in MI is 10.93¢/kWh and the average industrial electricity rate in MI is 7.62¢/kWh.
The average residential electricity rate in MI is 29.3% more than the average commercial electricity rate and 85.4% more than the average industrial electricity rate.
In 2018, the annual sale of electricity to Michigan customers in all sectors was 103,903 thousand megawatt hours. Residential customers bought 34,973 (33.66%); commercial customers bought 39,115 (37.65%); industrial customers bought 29,808 (28.69%); and transportation customers bought 7.
Externalized costs are costs of production that someone else pays. The extra money paid by residential customers reduced the cost to commercial and industrial customers and boosted their profits at our expense.
“The mission of the Michigan Public Service Commission is to protect the public by ensuring safe, reliable, and accessible energy and telecommunications services at reasonable rates for Michigan's residents.”
In Michigan, residential customers in bought 33.7% of the electricity but we paid 43% of the cost. A similar story can be told for natural gas and telecommunications
The Michigan Public Service Commission is NOT doing its job; it is NOT ensuring accessible energy and telecommunications services at reasonable rates for Michigan’s residents.
I am proposing that residential customers of public services in Michigan should get the lowest rate available for electric, natural gas, water and sewer, and telecommunications (including telephone, Internet and video/cable) services AND that all service contracts for residential customers be month-to-month.
Furthermore, I am proposing that residential customers of public services have access to a local service counter AND that the policies and prices for residential customers who are new customers or late in payments be at least as lenient as those for commercial and industrial customers.
It is time to put the public first in public services!
