The Eltham Spiritualist Church, originally known as "The church of the Seven Principles", was formed by a group of Spiritualists who held their first meeting on January 8th 1922 at the residence of Mr J Lewis Wallis, the first President. It was agreed to hire rooms of the R.A.C.S. above the Co-Operative Society in Well Hall to hold the first meeting on Sunday January 22nd 1922. The group set about raising funds to build their own Church and were advanced money by the Spiritualists National Union.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle donated £5 in 1923 and sent the group a letter wishing them well in their efforts. The foundation stone of the new building was laid on the 4th June 1938 in Well Hall Road where the Church still stands today. The Church was known as "The Church on the Hill".
The Spiritualists National Union becames the trustees so that the Church would always be used for the purpose which its founders intended. From the beginning it has always been an SNU Spiritualist Church and there have always been services and events held at the Church.
The Church is thriving and offers a warm welcome to everyone who enters. People of all faiths and religions can come to the Church and enjoy all the events, have Healing and listen to spiritualist philosophy.
The Spiritualists National Union.
The Spiritualists National Union began in 1890 as the National Spiritualist Federation and became the Spiritualists National Union Limited in 1901.
Since 1950 the Spiritualists National Union has been the legally recognised body for the religion of Spiritualism in the United Kingdom and is recognised by the UK Government Home Office.
Prior to 1951 Mediums could be tried under Acts of Parliament for witchcraft, as was demonstrated by the famous trial of Helen Duncan, a Scottish housewife who was imprisoned in 1944 for 9 months being branded as a witch even though her psychic abilities had been proven. The founders of the Spiritualists National Union campaigned for changes in the law and the Fraudulent Mediums Act was passed in 1951 which enabled Spiritualists to practice their religion legally.
