On Saturday, November 19, 2011, the East Longmeadow High School Athletic Hall of Fame held its 4th Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. Twenty-two inductees were enshrined at the Elmcrest Country Club in front of nearly 300 attendees.
Corrie Ackerley was a four-year, three-sport athlete participating in Soccer, Basketball and Lacrosse. She was a three-year starter, captain and MVP in lacrosse and was selected All-Western-Mass in both her junior and senior years. Corrie holds tne school records for most goals per season (64), most goals per game (7) and most career goals (103). In soccer Corrie was team captain and All-Western-Mass 2nd team, Western-Mass Champion and came in 3rd at the States during her senior year. In basketball, she was team captain and voted All-League during her senior year.
Erwin Belorusky was a four-sport athlete participating in Football, Swimming, Baseball and Track. He was noted as Outstanding Grid-Man and was selected All-Western Mass in football. Erwin was a four-year letterman, five-time Western-Mass champion in swimming. He held the the school record for the 100 yard breaststroke. He was two-time State champion in 100 breaststroke and 200 medley relay and two-time New England champion also. Erwin was a two-time Western-Mass All-Star and team captain and MVP during his senior year.
Tom Benton was a three-sport athlete. He lettered in Soccer, anf Hockey all four years and lettered in Track during his senior year. Tom had a 1.73 goals against average in 1961-1962 and helped his team win the first ever ELHS team championship. Hw was voted All-Western-Mass honorable mentiion during his senior year.
David Buddington was a three-sport athlete participating in Football, Hockey and Track. He was selected All-Suburban League second team fullback, All-Western-Mass MVP, and was the first ELHS athlete to be selected All-American.
Doug Burr was a three-sport athlete participating in Soccer, Basketball and Golf. He was voted All-League and All-Western-Mass in soccer and led his team in scoring during his senior year. He broke the school record for most assists (112) in basketball. Doug was the team MVP and captain in golf. He broke the school record with a low-score (73) and qualified for both Western-Mass and State golf championships. Doug was the recipient of the John (Red) Stewart award, the Dartmouth Book Club award, the Civitan Club Good Citizenship award and the American Legion School award.
Matt D'Amato was a four-year starting goalie in Hockey. His team won the League championship in 1969 and he was awarded the good-sportsmanship award in the Wright Division. Matt was team captain and was voted team MVP during his senior year. He was All-League and All-Western-Mass second team. Considered "Brilliant" in the goal, Matt holds the school record for fewest goals scored upon.
David Donn was a three-sport athlete participating in Cross Country, Basketball and Tennis, lettering in all three sports. David was selected All-Western-Mass all four years in tennis and was undefeated in match play during his sophomore, junior and senior years. He was the first Western-Mass athlete to win three concecutive singles titles and was a State finalist in all three of those years. David continued tennis at the University of Richmond lding the :Spirdes" to 2 Div II tourmanent appearences. He was All-Atlantic 10 and was honores as Student Athlete of the Year in 2004.
Noreen Drenthe was a four-year starter in Soccer. She was team captain and was voted team MVP and Division II MVP. Noreen was a four-time All-Western- Mas and earned All-State honors. during her senior year. She was a four-time All-League earned academic honor roll status and was identified as "a player to watch". Noren compiled a school record of 50 goals and 30 assists. She was a two-time selection for division " Player of the Year".
Erin Duffy was a three-time selection for All-Western-Mass in both Soccer and Lacrosse. She was two-time captain of the soccer team and captained both the basketball and lacrosse teams during her senior year. Erin recieved the "Robert Smith" award from the Western Mass Soccer Officials Association as Division II tournament MVP in both her junior and senior years. She was a two-time All-State selection and Channel 22 "Athlete of the Week". Erin helped herteam to fifteen shutouts including fourin tournament play during her senior year, winning the State championship. Erin went on to play soccer at Wheaton College and was selected first-team AllAmerican three times.
Katie Farrell was a three-sport athlete participating in Gymnastics, Swimming and Track. She captained her gymnastics during her junior and senior years and captained swimming, diving and track teams during her senior year. Katie held school records in diving, and track (long jump, triple jump, 4x100 relay and 100 hurdles. She was selected All-Western-Mass in all three sports and won Western-Mass "Gymnast of the Year". She was a State finalist in the triple jump. nnechaug). She and Bill have been married for 18 years and have two children, Russell and Megan.
Coleen Ferri was a three-spot varsity athlete participating in Soccer, Basketball and Softball. She captained all three teams during her senior year. Coleen was a Western-Mass finalist in soccer during her senior year. She was All-Western-Mass in all three sports and won the Western-Mass softball tournament during her senior year. Coleen continued her softball career at American International College where she was voted team captain her senior year. She was selected All-New England her junior and senior years. Twice selected for Northeast 8 "Player of the Week" and holds the record for most cxareer doubles at AIC. Coleen lives and works in East Longmeadow.
Kristy Ingulli was a two-sport four-year varsity athlete in Soccer and Track. She led the soccer team in scoring all four years as a starter. She was named team MVP her sophomore, junior and senior years and was voted team captain her junior and senior years. In track she was selected coaches All-League and All-Western-Mass second teams. Kristy distinguished herself by becoming a three-time All-Western-Mass champion in the triple jump for three consecutive years. She broke the school record in the 300 low hurdles and was a member of the Western-Mass Fellowship of Christian Athletes first place mile relay team. She has worked tn the field of sports medicine as a physical therapist and certified athletic trainer. Kristy now resides in Phoenix with her husband Tom and their two children Caroline and Tommy.
Brian Kennedy was atwo-sport athlete participating in Football and Basketball. He was captain of the basketball team and earned All-Western-Mass in his junior year and All-League during his junior and senior years. He was featured in Pre-season High School Basketball illustrated report as one of the East's outstanding prospects. Brian continued to play basketball at St. Francis Xavier where he captained the team during his junior and senior years. He was All-League honorable mention in his freshman and junior years.
Jim Latourelle was a two-sport athlete participating in Basketball and Baseball. A three-year varsity player in both sports, he was voted basketball MVP in his senior year and baseball team MVP in both his junior and senior years. He broke the school record for most points in a game (38) and was selected All-Western-Mass his junior and senior years. His 1968 baseball team was Valley League champion. Jim led his team in nine departments his senior year: runs, hits, RBI's, triples, home runs, pitching wins and saves. Drafted by the Batyimore Oriels in 1968, he continued his baseball career at Springfield College. Jim persued a career in Physical Therapy at Columbia University where he recieved an MBA in Health Care Administration and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.
Tony Levesque holds thw all-time scoring record in hockey with 178 career points breaking a record that stood for 26 years. Tony was a Coaches All-Star and was selected All-Western-Mass his junior and senior years. He captained the first lacrosse team at ELHS and was the varsity starting pitcher his sophomore year. He continued playing hockey and lacrosse at North Adams State College. A bass player for the rock band Jacob's Son, he is proud to share the ELHS hockey 100 point banner with his brother Vincent.
Marc Maccarini was a four-year varsity football player and was a two-time team MVP. He captained his team his senior year and was selected All-Western-Mass his junior and senior years. Marc set the single season (127) the career (276) points and single season (21) touchdown records. He ran for more than 3000 career yards and averaged 9.4 yards per carry. Recognized by USA Today as the leading high school rusher in the nation for his single game effort of 360 yards on 13 carries. Marc was a four-event track and field athlete. He continued his track and field and football careers at Deerfield Academy and Trinity College where he was a three-year letterman and the NESCAC champion. He captained his team his senior year and was selected to the ECAC offensive first team.
Richard Mondoux was an outstanding hockey player. He had 130 career points in 63 games a record that stood for 26 years. Richard was thw Wright Division scoring leader in 1968 - 1969. He scored what might be the fastest goal in high school soccer at the 6 second mark in a game against Ludlow. He repeated his prowess with a goal at the 9 second mark in the first period and again at the 13 second mark in the third period against Pittsfield. He was voted team MVP in his senior year.
Mike Myers was a varsity starter in tennis all four years of his high school career. He compiled a career record of 54 wins and 2losses. Mike captained the team in his junior and senior years and was the team MVP three years running. A two-time Western-Mass champion, his team won Western-Mass and went on to the States. Mike competed in the individual semi-finals his senior year. He continued his tennis career at Springfield College where he was a four-year varsity player and conference MVP. Co-founder of the Enfield Tennis club, Mike lives with his wife Karen in East Longmeadow.
David Skowron was a two-sport athlete participating in football and swimming. He was a three-time selection to All-Western-Mass in both football and swimming. He captained the swim team his senior year He was Western-Mass champion i his sophomore year in the 100 fly and broke the school record in the same event during his senior year. David continued to show excellence as a swimmer at Gettysburg College.
David Tranghese played footballall four years, lettering in three of them. He was a two-time All- Conference selection and All-Western-Mass running back his senior year. David has a career record 35 touchdowns, 18 of which came during his senior year. He also lettered in baseball two years and was selected All-Western-Mass his senior year when hih team were Western-Mass champions.
Linda Valade played FieldHockey her junior and senior years and captained the Cheerleading squad her sophomore year. As a three-year member of the gymnastics team she competed in all four of the womens events at the local, Western-Mass, State and New England levels. Linda was a State and New England champion on the parallel bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Linda continued her gymnastics career at Springfield College where she was selected MVP. After graduating with a degree in physical edication, she ontinued to involve herself in gymnastics teaching on Long Island and then for many years at the East Longmeadow Recreation Department.
Paul Votze was a four-year member of thefooyball team, earning himself three letters. Playing on both sides of the ball as a running back and defensive linebacker he captained his team his senior year. During his three years on varsity he and his team ammased a record of 27-0 winning the Surban League title all three years and the Super Bowl in 1972. As a senior Paul was voted team MVP and received the Norman Dagnais award as Western-Mass MVP while also receiving All-Suburban and All-Western-Mass honors. Paul was also the recipent of the National Foorball Foundation's Western Mass Chapter scholar-athlete award. He went on to play football and lacrosse at Trinity College where his football team won the 1978 NESCAC championship. He continues to be involved in athletics as a coach and rider in the Pan-Mass Challenge benefitting the Jimmy Fund. He lives outside Boston with his wife Janet and their two children Emily and Anna.
Dena Wright was a three-sport athlete participating in Swimming, Track and Field Hockey. A gifted swimmer, she held school records in the 100 fly, 200 Individual medley and the 400 free relay. Dena was selected All-Western-Mass all four years of her high school career. She was the recipient of the prestigious Western-Mass Ray DeForge Scholarship as the best girls swimmer academically.
Dr. Charles Redington was the founding father of both the East Longmeadow Soccer Association (ELSA) and the East Longmeadow High School Athletib Hall of Fame. He and his good friend Conrad Heinrich procured and physically built soccer fields at Mapleshade School, the East Longmeadow Center and at American Saw for ELSA. The ELSA soccer program became the prime supplier of talent to high school soccer. Chuck was a FIFA Official and trained numerous young soccer players to became soccer referees. A title 9 supporter, he was responsible for the change of the women's basketball schedule to play on Friday nights throughout Western-Mass so parents could watch their children play. He served as East Longmeadow Parade Chairman and helped start a Boy Scout Troop.
Frank Dutille was one of ELHS's original teacher-coaches. He started the Track and Field rogram from day 1 and the Cross Country program. After pushing for 13 years he had it incorporated into the high school athletic program. Frank compiled a neet record of 170-85, coached three undefeated seasons and captured three Western-Mass championships. After his coaching years he officiated track and field at the National level including the Olympic trials, Para-Olympics, Special-Olympics and many college championships. He continued to help ELHS track by officiating their meets until his retirement. Frank was inducted into the Massachusetts Track Coaches Hall of Fame.
Jakie Upshaw began her teaching and coaching career in Marietta Georgia. Having received her Masters Degree arom Vanderbuilt University, she moved to Massachusteet to pursue her Doctorate Degree at Springfield College and began teaching at ELHS upon its opening. "Doc" as students called her, loved her work with them and made many endearing and long-lasting friendships. She taught physical education and coached basketball, tennis, field hockey and gymnastics. When she retired in 1983 she returned to Georgia where she lived until her death in 2007.
