September is History Month in Hawaii
Friday September 19th - Noon to 1 pm
Speaker: John Landry – Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum San Diego
Topic: "The Doolittle Raid - 1941"
The Doolittle Raid was an air raid on 18 April 1942 by the United States Army and Navy on the Japanese capital Tokyo and other places in Japan. The raid was named after Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle, who planned and led the attack. It was the first American air operation to strike the Japanese archipelago after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. It served as an initial retaliation and provided an important boost to American morale. Although the raid caused comparatively minor damage, it demonstrated that the Japanese mainland was vulnerable to American air attacks.
John Landry is a docent at the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum in San Diego, California. John is a Navy Veteran and participated in the blockade of Cuba as the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) officer on the Destroyer USS Wren DD 568.
