Trash your E-Waste

A CHALLENGE: Trash your E-Waste

Do you have hard to trash e-waste – old Computers, Laptops, Monitors, Printers, or TV’s?

Past President Phil Blackman through his connections with Olelo has told eaH about

Olelo’s “E-Waste Collection Event”

on August 26;  8 am to 1 pm at their Māpunapuna facility.

For more information see Olelo flyer below.

eaH is promoting this E-waste collection event as a way our Membership and Friends can do some housekeeping and reduce filling our landfill site with dangerous trash!

Win a Reward

We also want to encourage our Membership and Friends to share their stories of some long-held items deserving of mention, honor and humor?   How long have you held on to that first computer.  How old is that TV under the house?  What was your first computer / TV?

Email eaHawaii@gmail.com your stories and a pictures.

Pictures and stories will be posted on the eaH Web page and a short YouTube video.  Five responders will get a free eaH lunch and one selected responder will be our guest this Fall for our planned visit to the Hawaiian Railway Society's Oahu Railway Museum and ride on the restored vintage private Dillingham Parlor / Observation Car.  See Picture Below

To further encourage your participation in the e-trash event, Aaron Erickson, our eaH Treasurer, has volunteered to take your e-waste at the eaH Friday 18 August noon meetng and deliver it to Olelo’s Saturday E-Waste event! We will look forward to seeing you and your e-trash.

eaH Director Andrew Stanton shared this on E-Waste

In 2023, almost 30 Million tons of e-waste was generated.

This site shows a counter that gets continuously updated, almost every second:

A related but also important problem is the growth of interfaces and data storage technologies that quickly become obsolete:

5 1/4 " floppies ,

3 1/2 " floppies,

Zip Drives,

CDs,

DVDs,

External Hard Drives.

LaserDisks!

Seen below is a photo Andy shared of external drives that he has used over the years (that still have data). The challenge for him is making sure that they are completed wiped of data and he has updated backups somewhere like on a cloud storage system somewhere.
