Caption from 2024 Gausta exhibit:
"After the death of his father, young Osuld Torrison used his own savings to pay for his family to emigrate from Norway to Wisconsin. He began to learn the mercantile business in Manitowoc County and by 1853 opened the O. Torrison & Co. Store in the city of Manitowoc. It would eventually become one of Wisconsin's largest general stores.
"Osuld and Martha Findal Torrison had ten children. All eight of their sons attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. I.B. Torrison attended Luther at the same time as Herbjørn Gausta, and later married one of the daughters of Rev. U.V. Koren, Gausta's friend and patron near Decorah, Iowa."
